  Association of American Universities: About AAU
The operation of the AAU Washington office and some of the general costs of AAU meetings are financed by dues paid by the member institutions.
AAU Partners is the organization of partners (spouses) of AAU presidents and chancellors, which meets twice a year at the regular membership meetings to share information and address issues related to the myriad roles of the Partner on campus.
The AAU is a member of the American Council on Education and often coordinates its activities with other higher education organizations, particularly the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR).

AAU was founded in 1900 by a group of thirteen Ph.D. -granting universities in the U.S. to strengthen and standardize U.S. doctoral programs.
Today, the primary purpose of the AAU is to provide a forum for the development and implementation of institutional and national policies promoting strong programs in academic research and scholarship and undergraduate, graduate, and professional education.
AAU membership is by invitation only, and extends only to those universities who are deemed by the AAU to have exceptional quality in their research and graduate education programs.

 Texas A&M selected for membership in Association of American Universities
University of Texas at Austin and Rice University are the only other AAU members in Texas.
Texas A&M and the State University of New York at Stony Brook are the first new members since 1996, AAU said in its Monday announcement.
AAU President Nils Hasselmo said invitations were extended to Texas A&M and the State University of New York at Stony Brook as a result of a lengthy review of the breadth and depth of their research and academic programs.
