John Smyth, the founder of that first Baptist church, wrote in his "Short Confession of Faith" (1609) that Christ is the "only King, Priest, and Prophet of the church, (to whom) all power both in heaven and earth is given.”(2) Most Baptist confessions of faith contain statements on the high priestly office of Christ.
Their contemporaries, the Particular (Calvinistic) Baptists, placed greater emphasis on the activity of a sovereign God in redeeming those sinners elected to salvation be- fore the foundation of the world.
Baptist churches on the American frontier were often led by "farmer-preachers,” laypersons who worked in the community during the week and on Sunday exercised pastoral gifts within the local congregations.

What Makes a Baptist Church  an Independent Baptist Church
It was the practice of churches of the New Testament to send out missionaries by and through the local church because they recognized the fact and believed that Christ gave the authority and responsibility for reaching the world only to the church.
If it were scriptural for a church to redelegate the authority to another organization to send out missionaries, then it would be just as scriptural to redelegate that authority to another to baptize, to administer the Lord's supper, to exercise discipline, etc. The Bible does not teach or condone such action.
Independent Baptist churches can strive to work together with one another so long as they are in agreement with their mission, with their message, and with their method.

Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers - JAMES WHITSITT
His membership was transferred to the little church on Mill Creek (1794), where he was ordained to the gospel ministry, in which he labored with untiring faithfulness and distinguished success for more than fifty years.
He continued his labors with these churches from thirty to forty years, up to the time when the infirmities of age compelled him to give them up, one by one, and confine his ministry to his home church.
Mill Creek, the only church of which he was now pastor, allowed him an "assistant," but the relation soon became unsatisfactory to the old pastor, who resigned his charge, and, taking a letter of dismission, united with the First Church at Nashville, where he retained membership till the close of his life.
