A conference of representatives of several honor societies and the committee was held in the Office of Education, Department of the Interior, April 21-22, 1939, to seek ways of enhancing the value of college honor societies.
The objective of the ACHS now is to encourage all general and specialized honor societies to join forces for the establishment and maintenance of desirable standards and useful functions in higher education, and for the achievement of appropriate recognition of member societies of the Council of ACHS.
AN HONOR SOCIETY is an association of primarily collegiate members and chapters whose purposes are to encourage and recognize superior scholarship and/or leadership achievement either in broad fields of education or in departmental fields at either undergraduate or graduate levels.

One of the issues I always raise with students is whether the society that has invited them is a member of the society of honor societies - which does not allow for-profits I believe.
While I think that membership in the Association of College Honor Societies might be a good thing - it is no guarantee that your local honor society chapter is anything more than a way for the national society to obtain access to mailing lists.
SU has several other "national honor societies" like these that are not linked to a specific academic discipline, as well as many, many discipline-specific honor societies.
