Universities, like other state institutions, are mandated to serve the common good and to achieve that they are required to be agents of social change, an international gathering of academic leaders was told today.
Delivering a keynote address to the Association of Commonwealth Universities Conference of Executive Deans being held at the University of Adelaide, Dr Lynn Arnold said it was important but not sufficient for universities to produce enough graduates in appropriate disciplines for a country’s development needs and provide a foundation for research and scholarship.
University leaders must work together to ensure universities continue to be the drivers of social, cultural and economic development for the benefit of the whole Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan was created to enable Commonwealth students of high intellectual promise to pursue studies in Commonwealth countries other than their own so that on their return home they could make a distinctive contribution to life there, and to mutual understanding within the Commonwealth.
They are intended for study leading to a postgraduate qualification of a university in the awarding country, but may occasionally be held for research for a British degree supervised at a university in the awarding country.
The Commonwealth Universities Yearbook, produced by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and available for consultation at British universities and many large libraries will help candidates to discover whether and where study facilities are likely to be available in their subject.

Universities in all Commonwealth countries including Uganda continue to be dominated by men despite the efforts by gender activists to push for gender equality and equity.
Female staff numbers in commonwealth Universities, the London based ACU survey reveals that women were still severely under-represented at all upper levels of the academic and administrative hierarchies of Commonwealth universities.
The ACU survey indicates that in 2000, only 9.0% of Vice Chancellors and presidents were women in commonwealth Universities.

In creating a technology strategy within a university it is important to think of technology as approaches, rules and processes and, crucially, to understand that the strategy will be introduced within a social system made up of sceptical students and faculty.

In 1999 The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) organized jointly with the University of Natal a symposium entitled “The Social Demographic Impact of HIV/AIDS: Commonwealth Universities response”.
