First-class cricket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As of 2005, members of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians (ACS) are striving to resolve the matter and the ACS committee has been asked to address the issue as a priority at the society's 2006 AGM.
At one time, some cricket historians held that 1864 marked the origin of first-class cricket because that was when overarm bowling was officially introduced.
One prominent statistician then effectively challenged the 1864 date by producing a book of records that began in 1815, the year in which cricket began its recovery from the impact of the Napoleonic War.

Cricket is a sport that generates a large number of statistics.
Although cricket statistics have been recorded since the late 1800s, they have mostly been regarded by fans in a traditional manner of simply comparing the numbers between players.
Professional cricket coaches are using computer records of ball-by-ball play to obtain more detailed statistical analysis of player performances than ever before.

Test cricket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This ICC decision was taken despite the fact that they had received advice from the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians that only matches between nations should be given Test match status.
Test cricket's competition structure has evolved somewhat idiosyncratically due to the long match duration, cricket's status as one of the earliest professional spectator sports, and the wide geographical distribution of the teams.
However, with the entry of more countries into Test cricket competition, and a wish by the ICC to maintain public interest in Tests (which was flagging in many countries with the introduction of one-day cricket), a new system was added to Test match competition.

 Statisticians stumped by new rules
The Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, England (ACS) recently approached the ICC seeking clarifications on certain situations likely to be faced by the scorers and statisticians after the imposition of the new ruling.
Statisticians chose to ignore that ruling as it was a politically motivated move and had nothing to do with the level of the matches.
When statisticians protested against the grant of official status of matches played by Australia 'A', ICC revoked its decision and ruled that the matches by and against Australia 'A' were not official ones.

One of the first aims of the Association of Cricket Statisticians (founded in 1973) was to draw up a complete list of matches worldwide that should be regarded as First-class so that there was a definitive list that could be used for generating statistics.
The rulings that had been made by governing bodies, notably by the MCC in England, and in Australia and South Africa were all followed, but in some other countries no formal rulings had been made, although generally it was reasonably clear which matches were considered important.
The current definition of a First-class match is pretty much unchanged from the 1947 definition, the notable change being that matches have to be played "on natural turf pitches on international standard grounds." The ICC maintain a list of matches that are regarded as First-class in each country.
