Some Free Advice to Democrats by William L. Anderson
John Kerry has just begun his concession speech as I write the first words of this piece, so there can be no doubt that the Democrats have managed to lose an election that last spring seemed to belong to whichever candidate would spend the requisite number of nights in a Holiday Inn.
Most Democrats today consider Franklin D. Roosevelt to be the standard of the party, just as Republicans like to call themselves the "party of Lincoln." As far as I am concerned, you can let them have Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.
Democrats are a hodgepodge of the very wealthy (from inherited wealth), the educated elite (such as my favorite "distorian," Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.), the very poor, minority groups, rabid environmentalists, feminists, and the American Trial Lawyers Association, which funds this whole unwieldy operation.

A number of modern commentators have claimed the decline of the Westphalian state as the principal actor of the international system, pointing to economic, cultural, political, and technological changes in the world, such as globalization and the emergence of regional and supernational groupings such as the European Union.
North American Free Trade Agreement, European Union, it is always controversial to do so, and opens the question of whether these blocs are in fact simply larger states.
The views of social liberals regarding the state are also broadly shared by the social democrats and democratic socialists.

Miers never served as a judge and her critics said her background as an attorney, a former head of the Texas State Bar Association and as a Dallas city council member provided few clues to her judicial philosophy.
Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee had asked for documents she had worked on as the White House's top lawyer.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, who said he had recommended that Bush nominate Miers, blamed "the radical right wing of the Republican Party" for killing her nomination.

National Rifle Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NRA is considered by many to be one of the most influential political lobbies in the USA because of its ability to consistently deliver large numbers of votes in elections, as well as its record of campaign contributions and activities in lobbying against gun control.
The NRA is officially nonpartisan, and has endorsed both Democrats and Republicans; however, more Republicans tend to agree with its views than Democrats, and this is reflected in the number of endorsements.
The NRA is not directly involved in the practical pistol competitions conducted by the International Practical Shooting Confederation and International Defensive Pistol Association, or in cowboy action shooting; both of these types of events have grown dramatically in recent years.

And the Democrats planned that the year 2000 would be dominated by their agenda: Medicare coverage for prescription drugs, HMO regulation, gun control, and education funding -- all winning issues, the polls said, for Democrats.
Democrats filed 84 ethics charges against Gingrich and in the end none stuck.(The only blood drawn from Gingrich was the result of an error committed by attorneys in the course of the House investigation of complaints that had little to do with the orignal filings.) FEC and IRS complaints were targeted at Gingrich's political groups.

The treaty of free association between the United States, Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia ended more than four decades of United Nations trust territory status for the islands, and these new nations, under new flags, themselves then became members of the United Nations.
Free association is based on separate sovereignty, nationality and citizenship, and is free because any party to the compact can terminate it in favor of full independence at any time.
Indeed, the whole point of free association is that it continues as long as it serves the mutual interest of the parties.

The comments from union leaders and delegates, who decide individually whether they will attend parties, are an early sign that the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association could have an impact on convention activities.
Several delegates said they were emboldened by Senator John F. Kerry, the presumptive nominee, who canceled a speech before the US Conference of Mayors in Boston Monday, saying he would not cross a police-led picket line at the event.

Free-Speech Zone? Democratic Convention Plan Puts Protesters Blocks Away
Protesters at this summer's Democratic National Convention in Boston may be confined to a cozy triangle of land off Haymarket Square, blocked off from the FleetCenter and convention delegates by a maze of Central Artery service roads, MBTA train tracks, and a temporary parking lot holding scores of buses and media trucks.
Relegated to a parking lot blocks from the convention arena, protesters sued, and less than a month before that convention began, a federal judge ruled that the designated area was unconstitutional.
In addition, several city unions -- most notably the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association -- are threatening to picket outside the convention if their contracts with the city aren't settled by July.

Even in schools with diverse student bodies, studies show that students of the same race tend to associate with one another and form separate cliques; sociological benefits may exist, but they are minute at best.
