Association of Southeast Asian Nations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
East Asian Summit to be held in late 2005 and hosted by Malaysia is to be restricted to signatories of the TAC.
The association includes about 8% of the world's population and in 2003 it had a combined GDP of about US$700 billion (roughly equivalent to South Korea) and this GDP was growing at an average rate of around 4% p.a.
According to the declaration, "an ASEAN Community" would be set upon three pillars, "namely political and security cooperation, economic cooperation, and socio-cultural cooperation...for the purpose of ensuring durable peace, stability and shared prosperity in the region." The plan envisaged a region with a population of 500 million and annual trade of US$720 billion.

The EU's relations with ASEAN - Overview
ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand with the signature of the Bangkok declaration by the five original member nations ( Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand).
Co-operation between the EU and ASEAN is based on a Co-operation Agreement (1980) between the EC and member countries of ASEAN: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Protocols for the accession of Laos and Cambodia to the Agreement were signed in July 2000 but the EU has indicated that it cannot agree to negotiate an extension of this agreement to Burma/Myanmar as long as the situation as regards democracy and human rights in that country does not improve significantly.

However, there was a very low costing solution for these East Asian countries and it was for Japan to help by either canceling the debts or controlling its currency.
Briefly, the 97 Financial Crisis was because of the East Asia currencies unofficially pegging with the dollar and having great investments Japan, so when the Yen started to raise in value, these countries had a big problem of going in great debt.
The last ASEAN summit was the eighth summit in Cambodia from the forth to the fifth of November.

South East Asian summit seals free trade agreement with China
ASEAN was formed in 1967, in the wake of the bloody US-backed coup in Indonesia, as a pro-US grouping directed primarily against China.
In this light, the reaction of ASEAN leaders to the refusal by Australian Prime Minister John Howard to sign the organisation’s 1976 Treaty of Amity and Friendship is significant.
For the ASEAN ruling elites, there was little choice but to accept China’s offer of increased integration with its booming economy.

UN ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME APPLAUDS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH-EAST ASIAN NATIONS ON FIRE HAZE AGREEMENT
On Tuesday, 25 November, a legal agreement among the 10 member countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) comes into force.
UNEP Executive Director Klaus Toepfer said today, "I congratulate ASEAN and the Governments of South-East Asia for their foresight and commitment in combating the threats posed by uncontrolled land and forest fires.  Such fires spell a double disaster for the environment through their massive release of greenhouse gases and their destruction of biodiversity".
The ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, designed to prevent haze from land and forest fires, could become a global model for the tackling of transboundary issues according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

 UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1983 Issue 4 - 012
An important achievement made by member States of ASEAN was the establishment of the ASEAN narcotics desk at the ASEAN secretariat and the appointment of a narcotics desk officer who coordinates narcotics matters and encourages intensified co-operation between member States with the aim of helping the anti-narcotics activities at the ASEAN level.
Evidence of the determination of ASEAN countries to overcome the drug problem is the signing of the ASEAN Declaration of Principles to Combat the Abuse of Narcotic Drugs on 26 June 1976 at Manila.
As a result of the ASEAN Declaration, the member States agreed to establish technical, social, economic, cultural and scientific co-operation in their mutual interests.

Guardian Unlimited Guardian daily comment Hopes and fears of an Asian Union
Foreign ministers of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) meeting in Mactan in the Philippines failed to resolve a bitter row yesterday over whether to allow Burma's military regime to have the rotating chairmanship next year.
Regional analysts say this December's ground-breaking East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur could pave the way for the eventual creation of a permanent East Asian Community, the equivalent of the European Union or, in its initial stages at least, of the former European Economic Community.
It is a proposal that Asean's members - Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - join the economic giants China, Japan and South Korea, and possibly other countries, in a new and much more powerful regional organisation.
