In October of 2000 (during the campaign), a proposal was made to alter the structures of the ASGP and GPUSA to be complementary organizations with the ASGP focusing on electoral politics and the GPUSA focusing on issue advocacy.
The ASGP then changed its name to "The Green Party of the United States" and was granted status as the official National Committee of the Green Party by the FEC in 2001.
The California Green Party has the largest number of greens, receiving 405,722 votes in the 2000 presidential elections, and electing 62 of the 171 office-holding greens nation-wide as of November, 2002.

 Green Party Unity Proposal
The Green Party shall leave the question of state dues entirely to the state parties and shall neither encourage state parties to collect dues nor discourage state parties from collecting dues.
State parties in the new Green Party shall have written democratic by-laws and at least one convention a year (whether it be a general membership assembly or a delegate assembly elected by locals and members-at-large).
The Green Party National Committee shall reserve seats for representatives of nationally organized caucuses for traditionally disempowered groups, provided that each caucus shall demonstrate a total membership of at least 100 people, from at least 15 member states, use democratic procedures and choose to send representatives to the National Committee.

The Green-Rainbow Party (GRP) name was established officially February 2003 to mark the union of what was then the Massachusetts Green Party with the Rainbow Coalition Party founded by legendary civil rights activist and former state representative Mel King.
The Massachusetts Green Party was itself founded in 1996, the year Ralph Nader first campaigned for President as a Green, as an affiliate of two seperate national Green organizations: the then newly created Association of State Green Parties (ASGP)-now the Green Party of the United States (GPUS)- and the Greens/ Green Party USA (G/GPUSA).

In the closing days of the campaign many state parties put out the call and the decision to form the ASGP was made by Green activists from twenty-five states who met in Virginia in November of 1996 -- just l0 days after the l996 elections.
Since then, the ASGP has met in Portland, Oregon, Topsham, Maine and Santa Fe, New Mexico, to continue its work of building the Green Party.
