The ATIO became the first translation association in the world whose certified members are deemed professionals by law, when in February 1989 the Province of Ontario granted a reserved title for certified members of ATIO through the Association of Translators and Interpreters Act, 1989.

A university degree in translation is required with a specialization in translation, interpretation or terminology in two languages including at least one of the two official languages.
