Cognitive psychology is associated with a school of thought known as cognitivism, whose adherents argue for an information processing model of mental function, informed by positivism and experimental psychology.
Since some areas of psychological research rely on "soft" methods such as surveys and questionnaires, some have said, psychology is not as scientific as it claims to be, although many would argue this is an outdated criticism based on misconceptions.
Some point out that astronomy's claim to being a science is also open to argument because its theories are largely untestable, being based in part on events that cannot be directly observed (philosophically, a scientific theory must be falsifiable: testable and open to the possibility of being proven false).

Grant Summary: California Institute of Technology
Researchers believe the scientific opportunities to be unlocked by TMT have the potential to fundamentally change scientists' understanding of the universe.
Caltech and its partner, the University of California (UC), spent two years developing a conceptual design for the telescope and are now ready to move forward with the next phase of the project.
Caltech and UC will collaborate with the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy and the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy for the detailed design phase and potentially for the construction and operation of the telescope.

"We've had promising discussions with the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy and the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy, both of whom are considering joining us as major collaborators.
Ellis says TMT is a natural project for Caltech to undertake, given its decades of experience in constructing, operating, and conducting science with the world's largest telescopes.
Before Caltech and the University of California's jointly-operated Keck Observatory went on-line in the 1990s, Caltech's 200-inch Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory was among the largest optical instruments in the world.

 BHL Research Topics: Big Science
After World War II the organization of scientific research in the United States changed from the classic "little science", popularly characterized by the lone genius puttering about in his dusty lab, to the modern "big science"--huge research establishments using large and costly instruments to solve big problems--epitomized by the Manhattan Project and the space program.
The University of Michigan, through professor Robert McMath, was instrumental in the founding and development of AURA and Kitt Peak.

Boyter v. State, Dept. of Labor and Industrial Relations (Summary Disposition Order)
The evidence adduced at the hearing before the ESARO established that Boyter was discontent with his employment at AURA as well as his living situation in Hilo almost immediately upon his arrival in Hilo.
AURA introduced several e-mails from Boyter to various AURA supervisors, informing them that he no longer wished to continue his employment with AURA from Hilo; in response, AURA twice persuaded Boyter to continue his employment.
Thus, inasmuch as (1) there was substantial evidence to support the ESARO's conclusion that Boyter voluntarily terminated his employment relationship with AURA and (2) "the clearly erroneous standard requires the court to sustain the [ESARO's] findings unless the court is left with a firm and definite conviction that a mistake has been made," Korsak v.
