Assonet was settled on April 2, 1659, but a string of wars between English settlers and the local Wampanoag Indians, including King Philip's War, prevented much permanent settlement until later.
Assonet was far enough east that it avoided many of the problems faced during the French and Indian War, but did feature in the Revolutionary War.
Skirmishes were fought in Assonet, and the Battle of Freetown was fought on the outskirts of the village in present-day Fall River.

From the Concord River at Billerica Mills it descended three or four feet, according to the height of the water in the river; thence by one level of five miles to Middlesex Village, where, by three locks, it entered the Merrimack.
The variation of level from the Concord River to tide-water was 107 feet; the descent from the Concord to the Merrimack being 27 feet.
This river is celebrated for its great and widely distributed water-power, and for the multitude of alewives which formerly thronged its waters.

Overall the water quality of the river is average: pH is low, DO is high, and our values for the nitrogen and reactive phosphorus are to relatively close to the levels in other rivers of our area.
The pH of Assonet River is acidic (average 4.5) possibly due to the fact that it drains wetlands.

BERKLEY — The town may have to take legal action against the owner of a pontoon boat that has been beached on the banks of the Assonet River since June to have it removed.
When Fred Moulding, the former owner of a house at 11 Chester Ave., was selling the house last spring, he sold the boat, which was kept at that property's dock, to Dann for $1.
Dann said the Dartmouth man had planned to move the boat to Fall River and convert it into a restaurant, but later decided to abandon the project and seek legal assistance to see if he could return the boat to Dann or Moulding because no title had been passed among them.

For those visiting or moving to Freetown, even though Freetown is officially one town, it is know to many as two villages, Assonet (exit 9 and 10 on route 24/79) and East Freetown (exit 8 on route 140), both with distinct centers and histories.
One example of this is during the Revolutionary War, in which Assonet Village was Loyalist, while East Freetown was with the Revolutionaries (Trivia: Loyalist houses were identified by white chimneys with a fl stripe).
Assonet, it is local for Assonet residents to call anyone in East Freetown.

According to Dr. Manuel Da Silva, in his classic 1971 study entitled "Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock", the first indication of a Catholic presence in the area is to be found among the layers of graffiti on a rock on the shores of the Assonet River.
Da Silva makes a persuasive case that Dighton Rock is etched with the name of the Portuguese explorer Miguel Corte Real, three crosses in the style known as the Cross of Christ, the Coat of Arms of the king of Portugal, and the date 1511.

The dismantling of Edwards Dam on Maine's Kennebec River is perhaps the most celebrated removal effort in the region.
Since it was knocked down in 1999, Atlantic salmon, alewives, sturgeon and shad have come back in such large numbers that even environmentalists, who had long touted the ecological advantages of removal, were surprised.
