The fact that the Cathedral of the Assumption at Vladimir was suggested to Fieravanti as a model can be explained on the ground that the design of a great cathedral, the very see of the Orthodox faith, could hardly be entrusted to a foreigner, a Roman Catholic at that.
When the Italian architect Fieravanti was summoned by Ivan III to reconstruct the old church in 1475, he was advised to do to Vladimir and study the Cathedral of the Assumption built in 1158.
Fieravanti's plan contained, however, a number of significant deviations from the traditional church architecture, therefore the Cathedral of the Assumption represents a felicitous meeting of two cultures: the Russian, with its Byzantine heritage, and the Western Europian, as expressed in the architectural ideals of the Italian Renaissance.
