Assumption University of Windsor has a heritage reaching back to 1857 and is the parent of the University of Windsor, administered by the Congregation of St. Basil, the Basilian Fathers.
When the University of Windsor was established in 1963, Assumption University entered into federation with the newly formed University of Windsor and became the Catholic University within the University of Windsor.
Assumption is a privately operated, autonomous University separate from the University of Windsor and yet an integral part of it.

Also in 1962, Assumption University became the University of Windsor and was incorporated by the province.
