Assumptionists focus their apostolic energies in three main directions: ecumenism, work with the poor, and serious study in the broadest sense of the word.
In this mission, the Assumptionist has recourse to the whole arsenal of the faith: education, preaching, publications, research, works of charity and foreign missions, in which the Oblates of the Assumption, founded by him in 1865, were also to participate.
In the late nineteenth century, the Assumptionist Congregation began its expansion througout Europe: 1880, to Spain; 1892, to Belgium; 1900, to the Netherlands; 1901; to England; 1928, to Germany.

Father Emmanuel d’Alzon (1810-1880), the founder of the Assumptionists and the Oblates of the Assumption, started the paper, although its biggest early advocate was Father Vincent-de-Paul Bailly.
La Croix succeeded in bringing together certain groups of Catholics who were seeking to position themselves outside of party politics and ideologies — but during the Dreyfus affair it nonetheless adopted a strongly anti-Dreyfus stance.
On 25 January 1900, the Assumptionists were dissolved by law by Waldeck-Rousseau, and the newspaper's publishing house, la Bonne Presse, was purchased by Paul Feron-Vrau.

The Assumptionists (Augustinians of the Assumption) are a religious institute of the (Roman) Catholic Church founded in 1850 by a French priest, Fr Emmanuel d’Alzon (1810-1880).
Other Assumptionists who are likely are to be beatified soon are three Bulgarian priests, who were executed in 1952 after a trial for espionage, characterized by an official report to the British Foreign Office as obviously staged.
The Assumptionists are known for two schools in England, both now returned to the respective dioceses: with the Becket School is St Michael’s College, Hitchin, which in 1978 moved to Stevenage and has now been absorbed in a larger comprehensive.

At Plovdiv, on Sunday, 26 May, the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Father beatified three Assumptionist priests (Augustinians of the Assumption), Kamen Vitchev, Pavel Djidjov and Josaphat Chichov as martyrs for the faith.
In 1949 he was made treasurer and procurator of the Bulgarian Assumptionists and showed great courage in defending the rights of his Congregation and of the Church.
On 19 September 1995 the process was begun for the cause of the martyrdom of the three Assumptionists.

Petar longed to become an Assumptionist and to work for the conversion of his Orthodox countrymen as a monk.
On the eve of World War II, the mission, largely in the hands of the Assumptionist Fathers, counted 127 secular priests and 200 religious of both sexes, 10 schools, two large hospitals and six orphanages.
