Tasmania's Freshwater Burrowing Crayfish - Engaeus - Description   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Though where it began remains unknown, a single group of crayfish (the oldest ancestors of modern freshwater crayfish) developed adaptations to the freshwater environment and radiated to become common in most parts of the world.
Freshwater Crayfish occur in two groups: the Northern Hemisphere Astacoidea and the Southern Hemisphere Parastacoidea.
The Astacoidea are divided into two smaller groups, the Astacidae : found in Europe and western North America and the Cambaridae: found in North America to middle America and east Asia.

Astacidea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Astacidea is a group of decapod crustaceans including lobsters, crayfish and their close relatives.
It comprises four superfamilies, two of crayfish (Astacoidea and Parastacoidea), one of true lobsters (Nephropoidea), and one of reef lobsters (the genus Enoplometopus).

The paper will be in the Symposial proceedings of the Mexican meeting and should be published in 2003.
The paper, titled "Actual and potential exotic ectosymbiotic branchiobdellidans (Annelida: Clitellata), reported on three "export" species of North American crayfish (Crustacea: Astacoidea)." It provides data on the crayfishworms that have and could be introduced into a country when North American crayfishes are imported without quarantine measures.
Although crayfishworms are not pathogens or parasites, they do act as an easily recognizable indicator of introduced species for Wildlife and Veterinarian Agencies.

Because lobsters bear ten legs, they are placed in the order Decapoda (from the Latin, meaning ten feet).
The infraorder Astacidea contains three superfamilies: the Nephropoidea (the commercially important marine lobsters) and the Astacoidea and Parastacoidea (freshwater crayfishes of the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively).
Similarly, the infraorder Palinuridea contains three superfamilies: the Eryonoidea (deepwater species), the Glypheoidea (a fossil group with only one living representative), and the Palinuroidea (the commercially important spiny and slipper lobsters).

More than one family may be present within the Nephropoidea, as has been suggested by Tshudy and Babcock (1997) but details of phylogenetic relationships within this superfamily are not the focus of this paper.
The crayfishes form a paraphyletic group in the present analysis, and the relationships of the Astacoidea to other astacidean groups are not resolved.
This is because morphological characters uniting astacid and parastacid crayfishes are not readily preserved in fossils so were not included in the analysis.
