 The Astadhyayi of Panini (Vol.VIII)
If it is accepted that Panini was the author of the Astadhyayi in the sense that he invented and developed the grammatical system on which the Astadhyayi is based, the question may be asked whether Panini was the author of the Astadhyayi as know it.
This question is to be decided on the basis of inconsistencies in the present text of the Astadhyayi.
Editors of this work assume that Panini was not the author of the Astadhyayi in the form in which we know it.

However it is not totally convincing since, to quote one example, the symbols for 1, 2 and 3 clearly don't come from letters but from one, two and three lines respectively.
There are other works which are closely associated with the Astadhyayi which some historians attribute to Panini, others attribute to authors before Panini, others attribute to authors after Panini.
To give an example of what we mean: if we were to pick up a text which contained as an example "I take the train to work every day" we would know that it had to have been written after railways became common.

When we started the Mahabhasya-project in 1967-eleven volumes have been printed so far, the last volume being Sthanivadbhavahnika, Part I, published in 1990, by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute--, our idea was that we would be able to understand Panini better through studying Patanjali.
Patanjali can only act as a guide to be critically followed, not as the final authority regarding the interpretation of the Astadhyayi.
We have also come to the conclusion that to some extent, the Kasikavrtti has preserved an authentic Paninian tradition, independent of and different from the one followed by and established by Patanjali and his grammatical sources.

the eight chapters of the Astadhyayi are divided into four padas each.
