Enterprise open source VoIP with Asterisk
Asterisk not only serves as an IP call signaling server (sometimes referred to as an IP PBX), but it also serves as a tradition TDM/analog PBX and seamlessly bridges the gap between the two worlds.
PBX is a very generic term that usually indicates some kind of central box that controls all the telephones.
Asterisk's parent company Digium makes PCI T1 and E1 adapters which are natively supported in Asterisk.

 Asterisk PBX
Private branch exchange (PBX) is a private telephony switch that resides inside the enterprise and is used for its internal employees to communicate both between themselves and the outside world.
The original purpose of a PBX was to allow line pooling within an enterprise in order to grant that enterprise the ability to have more employees than telephone lines taking advantages of the natural economies of scale that begin to occur as headcount rises.
Asterisk Pbx is unique in that it is interoperable with a huge number of devices and numerous protocols including SIP, IAX, and T1 All of these protocols are also supported by PBXtra.

Free and Open: An Interview with Mark Spencer, the Creator of Asterisk PBX | Linux Magazine
Created in 1999, Asterisk PBX is widely considered the first Open Source PBX to run on commodity hardware.
Asterisk PBX is Open Source Software (OSS), meaning it is free to download and use.
So Asterisk, for example, would be in a better position to be able to accommodate something new like an Open Source version of Skype than would a system that's entirely based on the notion that SIP is the only protocol.

 Asterisk IP PBX
This software PBX is designed as an open source, which means that it can be downloaded from the Internet, namely from: http://www.asterisk.org/index.php?menu=download, installed and used without any limitations.
The fact that the Asterisk is a software PBX indicates that VoIP is the native environment for this PBX.
Asterisk supports VoIP using three protocols, which means that its users can use a wide range of VoIP telephones, both software ones and hardphones.

HowTo interconnect sipX with the Asterisk PBX - SIPfoundry sipx, The Open Source SIP PBX for Linux - Calivia
There are binaries available for Asterisk from a variety of sources; however, the most reliable approach in our experience is to compile it from source.
In this particular example we used sipXphone to connect to Asterisk as this is a configuration not that often described.
SER and Asterisk have been a good combination in many cases already as is documented in a variety of places.

Asterisk :: The Open Source PBX & Telephony Platform | SLA (Shared Line Appearances) - Key System Functionality
The term "shared lines" in Asterisk means implementing the functionality of having a line appearance on a phone that maps to a trunk.
To create virtual stations, we have to map it to an Asterisk channel as well as define which virtual trunks this station will use.
Now, the interface between calls coming into Asterisk and the SLA emulation layer in Asterisk is built in the dialplan (extensions.conf).

PBX Manager for Asterisk - Features
The PBX Manager for Asterisk is a graphical management interface for Asterisk that allows to configure and manage it just like a conventional PBX, yet will not interfere with advanced voip customizations that you may want to implement.
You may either use a preconfigured sample configuration for Asterisk that is easy to adapt to your needs or integrate it into an already existing Asterisk configuration.
With the combination of Asterisk and PBX Manager you can build a professional PBX that is manageable much like a conventional telephone system, but opens up a whole new world of advanced VoIP and integration features.

Nerd Vittles » ISP-In-A-Box: Installing a Free Asterisk PBX Phone System (Part I)
Of course there are thousands of Asterisk developers around the world (even us) who will be more than happy to charge you $150 an hour to build any type of Asterisk PBX you can imagine, but we’re assuming your budget is more limited.
Asterisk is extremely processor-intensive because of the digitizing and compression of incoming and outgoing human speech so the more simultaneous calls and tasks you wish to handle, the beefier the machine needs to be.
If your VoIP PBX will be used in your home or home office by mostly your family where one person talks on the phone at a time, our recommendation would be to pick up one of the new 5.8GHz cordless phone sets.

Asterisk is revolutionizing the telecom industry, due in large part to the way it gets along with other network applications.

Although the first chapters are required reading for anyone using the Asterisk PBX, Chapters 10 though 15 are more aptly fitting the title of the book Future of Telephony with opinions on how things came to be and thoughts on how they might turn out over the years.

 Set Up Your Own IP-PBX
Your will have to set up three main components: the IP PBX itself, the phones (or softphones) to be used with it, and the gateway service that lets you call other people on the PSTN.
So you can build and experiment with your own IP PBX for an investment of less than $100, and for an ongoing cost of less than $100 per year.
By default, when you set up an extension, and add an email address in the “email address” field, then when the system records a message, it sends email containing a link that will let the recipient listen to the voice message on their computer (through the browser).

 Asterisk IP-PBX | about | asterisk pbx
Today's advanced open sourced Asterisk® PBX software has been the result of a quiet ongoing nine year revolution.
Vendor specific proprietary PBXs have always been "closed" systems, with hardware and handsets (phones) that are specific, not only limited by the manufacturer, but even by a model of that manufacturer.
In an Asterisk® based IP-PBX the signaling takes place between the server and phones, which are typically both on premise, much like a typical PBX.
