After they began making Asterix movies again in the mid 80's, they produced two very good ones ('Vs Caeser, and 'In Britain') but this 1989 movie is severely dumbed down.
It's actually based mainly on 'Asterix and the Soothsayer', with some of 'Asterix and the Big Fight' blended into it, but not the 'big fight' part, so that makes no sense at all.
Part of what was so great about the Asterix books was that they were multi-layered, that they included historical references which were educational and made kids curious about such matters.

The 33rd Asterix book is now listed at Amazon.fr with a release date of October 14th.
The last couple of books have been decidedly low-par (the series never really did survive the death of René Goscinny), but the artwork is almost always great, and a new Asterix book is such a rarity that it's always cause for a celebration, regardless of the actual quality of the story.
Coincidentally, the long-delayed DVD set featuring Asterix vs. Caesar, Asterix in Britain and Asterix and the Big Fight, is now listed, again at Amazon.fr, as coming out on the same day.

All in all, this film lacks the magic of the Twelve Tasks of Asterix film, or the Asterix and Cleopatra film and an attempt at a musical number, a gimmick which worked wonders in the latter film, goes sourly wrong, with poor writing and the Gauls singing in voices drowned out by the music.
From the patronising opening scene in which Asterix explains the term 'Gaul' to Obelix, it is clear that you are in for a tedious hour long slog.
