Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan, which both have strong comic book traditions of their own.
In the early album Asterix and the Goths, for instance, the Goths are represented as militaristic and regimented, reminiscent of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Germans.
In Asterix in Belgium, the chieftain of Asterix's Belgian hosts gains inspiration for patates frites and mussels, Belgium's two most famous culinary ambassadors, from a vat of boiling oil prepared as a Roman weapon, and a damp wooden plank belonging to the pirates (potatoes, however, were unknown in Europe at the time).

The Asterix translations are a brilliant balancing act between faithfulness and adaptation where the joke would be lost in transmission to another language and culture; would that more of the Anime shows that end up on Western TV were so well handled.

This book, it must be noted, is one of the later asterix adventures and I would have to say it doesn't hold up to the earlier ones penned by Goscinny (This is written and illustrated by Uderzo).
In Asterix and the Great Divide, a village divided by a ditch as well as their chiefs' opinions, with one side going to the Romans and having a hard time as Romans take them as slaves.
