Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan, which both have strong comic book traditions of their own.
Asterix lives around 50 BC in a fictional village in northwest Armorica (a region of ancient Gaul mostly identical to modern Brittany).
In Asterix in Belgium, the chieftain of Asterix's Belgian hosts gains inspiration for patates frites and mussels, Belgium's two most famous culinary ambassadors, from a vat of boiling oil prepared as a Roman weapon, and a damp wooden plank belonging to the pirates (potatoes, however, were unknown in Europe at the time).

Asterix the Gaul must be Europe's favourite comic book hero.
Asterix the Gaul is the inspired creation of Rene Goscinny, renowned author of several several short stories and comics (Lucky Luke, Isnogood, to name but two of his most successful), and Albert Uderzo, a highly talented comic book artist.
To my knowledge Asterix' adventures have been translated into 29 different languages, - even Latin (it is used in many schools where Latin is taught in order to loosen up an otherwise rather dry matter.).

As a kid I used to *love* "Asterix et Obelix", but recently, in fact just yesterday, I tried reading one where they give the Romans a potion that ends up growing their hair instead of making them strong, and it was really not that fun to read anymore.
Asterix used to be a two-man-show: René Goscinny wrote and Albert Uderzo drawed.
The Asterix Annotations are also a good resource for getting the hidden and not so hidden humour of the books.

Asterix, Obelix and the Briton take a barrel of magic potion back across the channel in an attempt to help the British villages to fight back.
Overall this is an acceptable addition to the Asterix stable, it doesn't totally manage to carry off the wit of the books but it's a reasonable funny and faithful version.

Well, almost all of Gaul - one village holds out against Rome because its inhabitants are supplied with magic potion by their druid; the magic potion gives them superhuman strength, and they use that strength to beat the stuffing out of the Romans on a regular basis.
This one is based on the book Asterix in Britain, and it follows the book quite closely.
