In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet of wet and unstable ground.

The picture below is of a self rescuer which every miner wore on his belt in case of a fire below ground.It protected the miner from carbon monoxide fumes given of by fires.
The next set of pictures were sent to me from the Astley green colliery museum in lancashire and show the underground locomotive No 17 which worked at yorkshire main untill the 1980s, it was then sent to Ashington central workshops for overhaul and then on to Ellington colliery.
The museum also has locos from Bentley colliery, Brodsworth, Rossington and thorne colliery.

 Poets Corner: Frank Seddon
Born 19th August 1914 at 9, Green Bank Street in an area of Tyldesley known as the Jigs, Frank Seddon was destined to work in coal mining from birth.
He was one of ten children, three girls and seven boys, all of the boys worked in collieries, although the two youngest never worked underground.
She was born in the village of Astley, by the canal, where her mother kept a small shop, selling sweets, tobacco and some essentials to the passing trade from the barges on the canal.

A group of more than 30 walkers comprising villagers and members of the Wigan branch of the Ramblers' Association completed a circular tour of the Higher Green area to highlight what they say is a lack of maintenance and absence of signposts.
The walkers started from Astley Green Colliery Museum and circled the village and parts of Boothstown on a two-hour walk.
John Neale, of Higher Green Lane, said a lack of signs had led to fears that walkers could end up trespassing on private land.

The walkers started from Astley Green Colliery Museum and circulated the village and parts of Boothstown on a two hour walk which highlighted neglected paths.
Group spokesman John Neale, of Higher Green Lane, explained how an evident lack of signs had caused great unease with users wary of trespassing and forced them to abandon walks.

 Northwest Report
The museum contained many interesting items for Group members to see and following the visit refreshments were available in a nearby pub and later at a Little Chef restaurant near Haydock.
Fortunately, the weather was fine during the major part of the Road Run and museum visit but as people set off for home rain did eventually overtake us.
The Group was grateful to the Parent Club Chairman, Peter Lockley, for travelling up from Rugby to be with us with his fine Vanguard Estate and also to Mike Wilks and his wife who also joined the Run with their very nice pre WW2 Standard.

Lots of miners went on strike to protest about some of the coal mines being closed down, which would mean that they or their fellow miners would lose their jobs.
There are loads of great museums where you can find out more about the history of coal mining.
