Aston Martin was founded in 1914 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford.
The 1929 Aston Martin International was another successful racer and was followed by the Le Mans and the Ulster.
The very British glamour of Aston Martin cars meant they were a natural choice for the James Bond series of action films, notably the silver DB5 that appears in Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965) as James Bond's company car, and then in GoldenEye (1995) as his private car.

It was basically a DB4 GT improved by the Zagato factory in Italy, by Ercole Spada.
The DB4 GT Zagato was raced in the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hours race by such famous names as Roy Salvadori and Jim Clark.

The original Aston Martin partners, Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin, completed the first car in 1914, didn't register it with the British government until 1915 and didn't build a second car until 1920.
Bamford was an engineer and Martin was a driving enthusiast, and both men competed fairly successfully in hill climbs, including a famous event at Aston Clinton, which would eventually give the marque half its name.
As was the norm with Aston Martin, the DB4 underwent constant evolution.

Perhaps the best known Aston Martin of all time, due to its starring role in the James Bond film, "Gold Finger", the DB5 was produced only from 1964 to 1965, a total of 1021 cars were built.
In normal Aston Martin tradition the AMV8 family grew to include a Vantage (higher performance version) and from 1986 a Vantage Volante (convertible) version was also added to the range.
Aston Martin build around 1,000 DB7 Vantages a year at its Bloxham assembly plant in Oxfordshire, around 45% of these are Volante's.

The DB4 was quite different from previous Aston Martin models - the new four-seater bodywork had been styled by Touring of Milan, and was constructed around their Patented "Superleggera" steel frame and mounted to a steel platform chassis.
Also in 1961 a higher performance DB4 was launched with a 266 bhp engine, and this was known as the DB4 Vantage, but an option for this car was the GT's 302 bhp engine, there were but a handful of these ever made though.
Minor trim and styling changes were made throoughout the production of the DB4 range which was discontinued in 1963 when it was replaced by the DB5 after approximately 1100 had been built.

On the suggestion of David Brown (the then owner of Aston Martin) I drove the car to Posnan in Poland where both David Brown and A Mainz and Son were exhibitors at a trade fair.
We have learned from Aston Martin Heritage that the number plate (SKY 925) is original to the car, having been issued in Bradford, England in 1959.
Armed with the chassis number of my DB4 he immediately located a build sheet for the car which he duly faxed through to me. The build sheet also includes a record of various repairs that were carried out under warranty during the first few months of the car's life.
