Topic: Aston Martin DB6

Aston Martin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aston Martin was founded in 1914 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford.
The 1929 Aston Martin International was another successful racer and was followed by the Le Mans and the Ulster.
The very British glamour of Aston Martin cars meant they were a natural choice for the James Bond series of action films, notably the silver DB5 that appears in Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965) as James Bond's company car, and then in GoldenEye (1995) as his private car.

Aston Martin DB6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Aston Martin DB6 was a sports car manufactured by Aston Martin from 1965 to 1970.
One major change from the DB5 to the DB6 was the abandonment of the superleggera construction technique for the more common body-on-frame.
The convertible DB6 Volante bowed at the 1966 London Motor Show.

The new Aston Martin DB6 was introduced at the 1965 London Motor Show as a distinctively restyled development of the successful DB4 and DB5 model ranges.
The Volante, Aston's term for its convertible models, was also introduced at the 1965 London Motor Show, the first batch of 37 cars being built on the last of the DB5 chassis frames with an 8-foot, 2-inch wheelbase.
The grown up DB6 MKI Volante then made its debut at the 1966 London Motor Show, its specification matching that of the DB6 saloon save for the power-operated hood and an all-up weight of 3,223 pounds, slightly less than that of the saloon.

The convertible version of the DB6 was unveiled at the 1966 London Motor Show and replaced the short lived, short wheelbase Volante.
So this mildly modified DB6 Volante which competed in the FPD Savills Race at the AMOC 40th Anniversary meeting in June 1999 was doubly surprising though a most welcome sight.
The DB6 Volante interior is identical to that of the saloon.

Aston Martin is a manufacturer of exclusive luxury automobiles.
The very British glamour of Aston Martin cars meant they were a natural choice for the James Bond series of action films, notably the silver DB5 that appears in Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965)), and then in GoldenEye (1995) as Bond's private car.
After an interlude with Lotus, Aston Martins were used again in The Living Daylights (1987) and after another hiatus the Vanquish appeared in Die Another Day (2002).

The DB6 was the final major derivative of the line started by the DB4; announced at the London Motor Show in 1965, production continued until the arrival of the Mark 2 in July 1969.
The changes to the DB6 were more structural than mechanical; indeed the construction of the car no longer followed the 'Superleggera' principles and the badges on the bonnet were soon deleted.
The DB6 is a popular first Aston Martin; relatively inexpensive when compared to a DB5 yet a more thoroughly developed motorcar.

The Aston Martin DB6, introduced in 1965 to replace the by then well established and world famous (James Bond) DB5 series is the last and best of the line of true DB Astons.
A fully comprehensive and clearly expert restoration using Aston Martin factory parts was undertaken in Switzerland in the eighties, commissioned by the then owner.
The DB6 was subsequently entrusted to the next owner, a well-known Bond Street Jeweller, during whose eight-year ownership the car was Aston Factory prepared with little regard to expense.

The original Aston Martin was built in 1914 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, the Aston prefix deriving from the Aston Clinton hillclimb where the car had successfully competed.
At the end of 1925 Bamford and Martin Ltd. was purchased by W. Renwick for £6000.
The first Aston Martin of the post-war years had a Claude Hill-designed pushrod 2 litre engine and independent front suspension, but only a few were made before the company was taken over by the David Brown group in 1947.

Aston Martin and Lagonda in Miniature
At Corgi, the DB6 must have been a favorite: their standard 1:64 scale model was produced for years in a confusing array variations.
Also interesting to note is that the DBS was the last Aston Martin employed by James Bond for a number of years; a metallic brown DBS is seen throughout "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and a very brief glimpse of a red DBS-V8 can be caught in Q's laboratory in 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever".
This car, known as the Lola Aston Martin T70, went on to became the subject of a rare Aston Martin miniature by the Italian firm of Polistil (Politoys).

Aston Martin DB6 - GB Classic Cars
The DB6 shared the same running gear as its predecessor and was also quite similar in appearance, and although it was slightly heavier than the DB5, performance of the DB6 was actually slightly better due to improved aerodynamics.
The DB6 was available as both sports saloon, and from 1966, as a convertible (Volante) which featured an electrically operated hood making it the first European drophead to feature a power operated roof.
In September 1969 the revised Mark II DB6 was launched and this is easily recognisable by the slightly flared wheel arches incorporated into the bodywork design to accommodate the wider 6 inch wheel rims.

Aston Martin DB6 - Aston Martin Classic
Of the classic Aston Martin DB series, which started with the DB4 in 1958, the DB6 was also the fastest, but in the eyes of some enthusiasts is a little softer and less sporting than its forbears.
The DB6 may ooze pure-bred Bulldog Britishness, but the styling is an evolution of the Touring of Milan designed DB4.

The DB6 bodywork had a new tail design, offering improved aerodynamics and also had a revised rear 1/4 windows and a higher rear roof line.
A convertible body style was also offered, as was the normal Aston tradition, although now called "Volante", a name still used by the company today.
Early (1965-1966) DB6 Volantes had a "short chassis" body, only 37 were produced and are distinguished by a shorter tail.

With many features transferred from Aston Martins successful DB3 and DB3S sports racing cars, the specification and performance of the Mk III was considered outstanding in the late 1950’s.
The DB Mk III was also the first Aston to be driven by fictional secret agent James Bond, as featured in the Ian Fleming novel Goldfinger, first published in 1959.
As with all early Aston Martins, the Mk III is a hand built car of very high quality, and has an inherent sporting nature, derived from the David Brown Aston racing program.

The DB6 was launched at the London Motor Show in 1965, and was the final evolution of the marque started by the DB4.
Production of the DB6 continued until July 1969, (when the Mark II was announced) by which time some 1,325 cars had been produced.
Numerous improvements were made on the previous DB5, more of a structural than mechanical nature, including a longer wheel base and higher roofline which gave better leg and headroom for any rear seat passengers, and the 'Kamm' tail which enhanced stability and aerodynamic drag factor.

Classic Driver - Magazine - classic car of the week - Aston Martin DB6, 1965-71
If James Bond had ever hung up his Walther PPK and settled down with wife and kids, the DB6 with its identifying up-lifted Kamm tail would have been the Aston for him.
Of the classic DB series, which started with the DB4 in 1958, the DB6 is also the fastest, but to the perverse mind-set of today's tweed and cravat crew its insidious refinements and creeping civilisation amount to middle-aged paunch.
Consequently the DB6, although the most civilised of the classic DB Astons, is the least prized and most affordable, and to those who feel more secure in their selves probably rates as the best buy.
