During Webb's period of office, the Academy hatched the idea of a Royal Fine Art Commission to advise the Government on the design of new monuments and buildings, and on other artistic matters.
Webb was PRA until 1924, when he was succeeded by Frank Dicksee.
Webb was the architect of many important London buildings around the turn of the century.

Aston Webb was born in London in 1849, the son of a successful painter, Edward Webb.
Webb began working with E. Ingress Bell (1836 or 37-1914) in the early 1880s and the pair secured their first important commission with a winning design for the Victoria Law Courts in Birmingham (1886).
Webb was knighted in 1904, received the Royal Gold Medal in Architecture in 1905 and the first recipient of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1907.

The building had a long gestation period with the foundation stones was laid by Edward VII in 1904, the Georgian houses on the site were demolished in 1913 and the building was finally completed in 1922 after the end of British rule.
The architect was Sir Aston Webb although credit is usually also given to Thomas Manly Deane whose offices were demolished for the building but who played little part in the project.
The building is constructed around a courtyard with the central dome placed over the pedimented central block to the rear of the site.
