The site is located behind the Village Hall on the edge of the Village, providing an ideal location for a green space in Aston on Clun, which has no other green space apart from a very tiny area, the site of the Arbor tree.
Hopesay is a sparsely populated parish, Aston on Clun being one of three villages in the parish, and it is very much intended that the Green will be used by residents of the whole parish.

By the mid 1950's, interest was waning even in Aston on Clun, even though Hopesay Parish Council had taken over care of the Tree at that time.
Tom Beardsley of Clun ('Tom Clun' - who wrote for many years for the Shropshire Magazine) suggested that a wedding pageant to celebrate the Marston wedding might excite local interest.
Aston on Clun is the only known village in Britain where this custom survives annually.

Here it coincides with yet another celebration, dear to the hearts of the villagers since 1786, when a local landowner, John Marston of Oaker married Miss Mary Carter of Sibdon Castle.
As Aston was part of the Marston estate, the villagers revived the old custom of dressing the Black Popular in the middle of the village with flags, to celebrate the event.
The bride and groom were so delighted with the result that they dispensed gold sovereigns to those responsible.
