Astonishing X-Men - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original Astonishing X-Men was a four-issue series that replaced Uncanny X-Men during the 1995 alternate universe storyline Age of Apocalypse, during which all X-Titles were given new names and numbering.
Astonishing X-Men, written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Joe Madureira, featured a team of X-Men led by Rogue and consisting of Sunfire, Blink, Morph, Sabretooth and Wildchild.
Astonishing X-Men is the name of several Marvel comic book series featuring the superhero team, the X-Men. /wiki/Astonishing_X-Men   (668 words)

 Review of 2004: Astonishing X-Men
Astonishing X-Men is not a book that delivers dazzling new ideas or radical innovations; it's simply a good, solid superhero book, with quality creators demonstrating what happens when you do it right.
The result was Astonishing X-Men, sold primarily on the name of Joss Whedon.
Whedon is evidently a huge fan of the stories Claremont was producing during his creative peak 20 years ago, the creators combine the spirit of those stories with their own style, producing a great example of what a mainstream X-Men comic in 2004 ought to look like. /astonishingxmen/astonishingxmen7.htm   (854 words)

Reviews by Maurice Broaddus: Astonishing X-Men
Astonishing X-Men is about a mission: the reconciliation between people groups, mutants and humans, to bring them together for peaceful coexistence.
And that trend continues with Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) on Astonishing X-Men (not to be confused with Ultimate X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, or New X-Men).
Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost have taken an immediate dislike to one another (the fact that Kitty’s first adventure as a part of the X-Men involved Emma Frost trying to kill her has something to do with this). /comments/maurice/2005/09/astonishing-x-men.html   (948 words)

Speaking more of Astonishing's place in the rest of the X-verse, Whedon said that he had to change a few things due to events such as House of M and Deadly Genesis, and will also be downplaying other events as far as Astonishing is concerned, though not contradicting anything that has happened.
Continuing, Marts said that if Astonishing has taught Marvel anything, it's that they shouldn't be afraid to focus on the characters and tell more concise stories that don't have to be epic, globe-trotting and galaxy-spanning, and just focus on the characters themselves.
The Astonishing upcoming run will be broken into segments like the first one, with, as Marts said, issues #13-18 forming one arc, and #19-#24 a second arc. /marvelnew/astonishing/Year2/press.htm   (1621 words) Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1: Gifted: Books: Joss Whedon,John Cassaday
The highlight of Marvel's X-Men: Reload event is the launch of Astonishing X-Men, drawn by superstar artist John Cassaday (Planetary, Captain America) and written by famed Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel creator Joss Whedon.
There are no coincidences in the "Astonishing X-Men," and by the end of the six issues making up "Gifted" we know most of what is going on, but the fun is just beginning.
The strengths that made Buffy a long-running cult hit are also in play here: a group of good-looking young outcasts who use their special abilities to protect mankind; vivid characterizations conveyed through deft dialogue that veers from the inspirational to the smartass; and a perfect balancing of action, soap opera, and humor. /exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0785115315?v=glance   (2312 words)

It’s one of a slew of X books that are suppose to interrelate, use some of the same characters and run pretty much concurrently.
In a way this book is a return to the time and style when X books towered above all others.
Considering the talent involved that may be seen as some as disappointing but I don’t think it is. The issue not only features the trademark dynamite Whedon dialogue but also shows he has a good grasp on the characters he apparently hand picked to use. /reviews.php?id=2963   (632 words)

 Archived Entry - 05/01/2004: "Joss Whedon's "Astonishing X-Men #1""
After acclaimed writer Grant Morrison was allowed to take the tired franchise that was X-Men into strange and exciting new territory, Whedon, as experimental as his assignment onto "Astonishing X-Men" may seem, is being asked to force the X-Men franchise to return to its crusty, frozen home base.
I don't envy Joss Whedon, the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" who has recently been tapped to write "Astonishing X-Men," here.
In his run Morrison worked to treat X-Men not as "another superhero title," but as a mix of superhero sub-genre conventions and more 'pure' sci-fi. /buzz/archive/00000082.htm   (595 words)

Joss Whedon's Next Project: Astonishing X-Men Comic Books
But even as the television networks began presenting their latest slate of reality vaudeville and Law & Order spinoffs, Whedon was busy planning his next project: not a TV pilot but a year’s worth of a comic book, Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men.
In fact, all of Whedon’s TV work bears the stamp of the X books, and not just because many of his stars are, like X-Men’s mutants, teenagers with unusual powers.
When Whedon tried to write a show with a single brooding lead, the Buffy-spinoff Angel, the attempt fell flat—but once he surrounded the titular character with a team of misfit heroes, the series began to sparkle. /nymetro/arts/9218   (743 words)
