  Astra 1A tribute
October 30th 2004: Astra 1A is about to be retired, SES have confirmed to me shes just about finished.
Astra 1A continues in use with analogue and digital signals at 5E.
SES-Astra have confirmed that 1A will be junked in the near future after almost 16 years use, because she is just about out of fuel - all remaining services have been moved over to 3A at 23E.

  European Commercial Broadcasting Satellite
ASTRA's first satellite, ASTRA 1A, was launched in December 1988 from the European Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana aboard an Ariane 4 rocket.
A considerable number of German broadcasting interests also migrated early to ASTRA and SES's evolving system was soon enabling diverse programme services in a wide variety of languages, ushering in a new era of themed private television and radio channels as alternatives to the general entertainment models commonly associated with terrestrial broadcasting.
ASTRA 1D inaugurated a significant new phase of technological development, for it is the first satellite in the system that can be operated in the BSS frequency band (Broadcast Satellite Services) reserved for future digital transmissions.

ASTRA's occasional use services are transmitted on ASTRA 1A and 3A with uplink frequency bands ranging from 14.00 to 14.50 GHz.
ASTRA provides VRT with full time capacity on ASTRA 1A at 5.2° East for the transmission of content between different European points of origin and VRT's studios.
The always-ready capacity on ASTRA 1A has proved to be a great asset, strengthening VRT’s position as the public broadcaster for the Flemish community.

The Astra network was doubled during 1993-1994 and at the end of 1994 consisted of four satellites, all launched by Ariane and stationed at 19.2 degrees E: Astra 1A (December, 1988), Astra 1B (March,1991), Astra 1C (May, 1993), and Astra 1D (November, 1994).
Astra 1A and Astra 1B are both based on Lockheed-Martin (GE Astro Space) spacecraft buses, although the former is a 1.0 metric ton 4000 series platform and the latter is a 1.5 metric ton 5000 series platform.
Astra 1C and 1D rely on the Hughes HS 601 spacecraft bus with an on-station mass of 1.7 metric tons.

The new ASTRA DVB services will enable broadcasters to transmit high quality digital television to European consumers and are due to start this year with the launch during the night of October 18th, 1995 from Kourou, French Guyana, of ASTRA 1E, the first in the ASTRA fleet dedicated to digital transmissions.
The fuel capacity of ASTRA 1A, launched on 11 December 1988, should ensure a service life in excess of 12 years, and as can be seen from fig 1 it is backed up by ASTRA 1C and 1F.
ASTRA is the only satellite system in the world to operate five satellites at the same orbital slot of 19.2 degrees east which means that consumers need only to purchase a single dish pointed at one place in the sky.

Astra 1A and 1B are already in orbit, both at 19.2 degrees East.
Because Astra's medium-powered satellites are at the same spot in the sky, viewers with relatively small antennas (60-90 cm) can tune into currently 32 and eventually 64 channels without expensive antenna rotors.
Astra is a radio pioneer, with many interesting stations, both new channels and established international broadcasters.

Space Transportation News of November 2002
The Astra 1K satellite, which was left into a low earth parking orbit following the failure of its launch on a Proton K/DM3 vehicle on November 25, has raised its orbit from 156 x 171 km to 217 x 362 km to prevent an early reentry.
Astra 1K was designed for 13 years of operational lifetime using either its Astrium S400 bipropellant engine or its Snecma SPT-100 stationary plasma thrusters for North-South station keeping.
Although Astra 1K is stranded in an orbit quite similar to that of the International Space Station (in terms of altitude and inclination, not for its orbital plane), SES-Global does not consider the option of salvaging the US$280-million spacecraft with a shuttle mission to recover it or equip it with a perigee kick motor.

The first three stages of the Proton rocket carried the Block DM upper stage and attached ASTRA 2C satellite into a parking orbit with a perigee altitude of 179 kilometers and an apogee altitude of 215 kilometers with an inclination of 51.6 degrees, officials reported.
ASTRA 2C is the twelfth SES satellite in the ASTRA series and it will be the fourth to be permanently co-located at the orbital position of 28.2 degrees East over the equator in geostationary orbit.
"With ASTRA 1A approaching the end of its expected lifetime after close to 13 years of successful operations in orbit, SES has decided to deploy ASTRA 2C temporarily at 19.2 degrees East," said Romain Bausch, director general of SES.
