Special report: Russian airlines gaining   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The modern Russian airline industry, born out of the demise of the Soviet Union and the reorganization of one-time state behemoth Aeroflot, is slowly regaining some of the momentum lost with the chaos and economic slowdown of the early 1990s.
Russia’s domestic airline sector has suffered since it was dealt a huge blow early last decade, when the economy slowed and demand for air transportation tumbled.
The airline was launched in 1993 as a joint-stock enterprise with the regional administration, which has a controlling share of 51 percent, and was in decline until 1998, when a new management team was hired.

ASTRAKHAN – As demand for eco-tourism in the Astrakhan Oblast grows, experts warn that the southern Russian region will have to adapt if it is to successfully handle the high visitor numbers predicted over the next several years.
Astrakhan Oblast’s natural beauty accounts for its popularity and makes the region especially suited for eco-tourism, which experts say will prove a lucrative growth area in Russia.
Experts say a bigger problem is that although the number of tourists to Astrakhan Oblast is constantly increasing, external investment has not started to arrive in the region.
