Josef Kind pointed out that Astrium had gone to considerable lengths to achieve the reduction in the cost of Ariane 5 components stipulated by Arianespace: "Everyone involved in the Ariane programme is well aware that the competition to provide services in connection with the launching of space vehicles is soon going to intensify.
Astrium and its partners have managed to reduce production costs by more than one third in comparison with the first order they received for the series production of Ariane components.

Astrium, and global mobile satellite communications provider, Inmarsat Limited have signed multiple strategic contracts with L-3 Communications' Storm Control Systems (L-3 Storm) subsidiary, to define, design, build and offer Satellite Control Centre (SCC) software and related services for future Astrium EUROSTAR 3 000/2000 satellite customers, including Inmarsat for its new 1-4 satellites.
The first operational use of the SCC will be for Inmarsat's I-4 series of spacecraft, planned for launch in 2003, as well as their existing Inmarsat-2 and Inmarsat-3 spacecraft.
The partnership agreement with Astrium and Inniarsat is being led for L-3 by Storm Control Systems Ltd. which is based just west of London.
