Astrograph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A 13-inch, f/5.3 astrograph at Lowell Observatory (a refractor with a 3 element lens) that was used in the discovery of Pluto.
Astrographs are usually used in wide field surveys of the night sky as well as detection of objects such as asteroids, meteors, and comets.
The main parameters of an Astrograph are the diameter and f-ratio of the objective which determine the field of view and image scale on the photographic plate or CCD detector.

 20-inch Carnegie Double Astrograph
The 20-inch Double Astrograph is a unique wide-angle photographic camera, specially designed for the historic Lick Northern Proper Motion survey, a mammoth photographic survey of the northern sky carried out over half a century by four generations of Lick astronomers.
A double astrograph is the optimal telescope to survey large areas of the sky accurately and efficiently.
Astrographic refractors not only provide a wide field of view; they also have an optical design that projects the sky accurately onto the flat photographic plates.

The principal telescope of the Cesco Observatory is a Double Astrograph consisting of two lenses each 51-cm in diameter, one optically corrected for blue light and the other for yellow light.
The effective passbands for the YSO lenses are then 410-480-nm for the blue and 520-570-nm for the yellow, with minimum foci at 435-nm and 535-nm, respectively.
The YSO astrograph has two guide telescopes, one for visually setting the telescope on the field, and another equipped with an image-dissector autoguider whose electronics were designed and constructed at Lick following the design of their autoguider.

 The 4x5 Astrograph
Peter had the year before built a large astrograph for use with medium format film, and this instrument was used to produce his famous comet video.
Perhaps the most critical aspect of the entire astrograph is the placement of the focusing plane of the ground glass, which has to be at exactly the same plane as the film in the holder.
To achive this a sheet of flim is placed in the film holder, a micrometer is used to measure the dpth to the film plane, and then Dave built and assembled the ground glass holder at exactly the same depth.

Bill Keel's Telescope Life List - Lick Observatory
The domes of the original 36" refractor (left, in the main building) and 120" Shane reflector (right) are most prominent, with the Crossley telescope on the ridge to the lower left of the main building and the double astrograph to the immediate left of the Shane telescope.
The Carnegie double astrograph was built for a single dedicated project - a long-term astrometric study of vast numbers of stars, using distant, faint galaxies as an inertial reference frame.
These included pictures of M31 (1 hour on 103a-O emulsion, blue astrograph - stick with the classics, we thought), and later a field around the double QSO 0957+561 including the edge-on spiral NGC 3079 (1 hour on 103a-G with the yellow lens through cirrus), showing the multiple images produced by the objective gratings.

Since the mid--1970s, the US Naval Observatory has operated an eight-inch double astrograph using lenses corrected for the yellow and blue spectral bandpass respectively.
The telescope has recently been modified using the yellow lens as the guidescope and replacing the blue lens with a new five--element red lens.
Built originally to use 8" by 10" photographic plates with a field of 5 by 5.5 degrees, the astrograph has been equiped with a Kodak 1552x1024 pixel CCD camera (pixel size of 9 \mu m x 9 \mu m) and 16 bit readout.

The focus sensors are based on a new design, which incorporates a Hartmann mask in the astrograph's converging f/7.3 beam.
A simple Hartmann-mask algorithm analyzes the observed relative image positions, determines the optimum focus and reports that value to the observer who decides whether or not it is necessary to refocus either the blue or yellow cameras.
As diagnostic aids for the interpretation of the observations, we have installed a NovaLynx weather station with temperatature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction computer inputs as well as additional precision temperature sensors at the astrograph lenses, cameras and external telescope points.

Students use both an astrograph -- telescope designed for sheet-film astrophotography -- and a CCD-equipped telescope.
They guide the astrograph manually (using a paddle) through exposures ranging from 10 to 20 minutes, then develop the 4x5 inch sheets of film in a photographic darkroom.
Digital images are much briefer, so manual guiding isn't necessary; the telescope and camera are controlled by The Sky 6 Professional and CCDSoft software (both generously donated by Software Bisque).
