Herbal Alchemy by Phillip Hurley - magic, alchemy, plants and astrology
Herbal Alchemy by Phillip Hurley - magic, alchemy, plants and astrology
When originally published in 1977, Herbal Alchemy broke new ground as the first straight-forward written presentation of Alchemy in a complete, practical form – as science, art, technique, philosophy, magic, and spiritual discipline.
In this revised and updated edition, Phillip Hurley provides detailed information about the preparation of alchemical elixirs from plants, the application of astrology to herbalism, and reveals secrets of occult ritual practice in the Tantric and Quabbalistic traditions.

  Alchemy - Crystalinks
Alchemy is an ancient path of spiritual purification and transformation; the expansion of consciousness and the development of insight and intuition through images.
Alchemy is a form of speculative thought that, among other aims, tried to transform base metals such as lead or copper into silver or gold and to discover a cure for disease and a way of extending life.
Alchemy was the name given in Latin Europe in the 12th century to an aspect of thought that corresponds to astrology, which is apparently an older tradition.

Alchemy - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema
Alchemy can be regarded as the precursor of the modern science of chemistry prior to the formulation of the scientific method.
Alchemy in the Western world and other locations where it was widely practiced was (and in many cases still is) closely allied and intertwined with traditional Babylonian-Greek style astrology; in numerous ways they were built to complement each other in the search for hidden knowledge.
Chinese alchemy was closely connected to Taoist forms of medicine, such as Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and to martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu (although some Tai Chi schools believe that their art derives from the Hygienic or Philosophical branches of Taoism, not the Alchemical).

Astrology - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema
Astrology (from Greek: αστρολογία = άστρον, astron, "star" + λόγος, logos, "word") is any of several traditions or systems in which knowledge of the apparent positions of celestial bodies is held to be useful in understanding, interpreting and organizing knowledge about reality and human existence on earth.
Astrology is not considered to be a science and is separate from astronomy, the scientific study of the heavens.
Political astrology has existed for thousands of years as well, while some astrologers use ancient methods which are supposed to be able to predict the weather and weather-related phenomena (storms, floods, etc.), which is collectively known as meteorological astrology.

Alchemy - WiccanWeb.ca   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Alchemy has been practiced in Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persia, India, and China, in Classical Greece and Rome, in the Islamic empire, and then in Europe up to the nineteenth century — in a complex network of schools and philosophical systems spanning at least 2500 years.
In the course of the early modern period, as mainstream alchemy evolved into modern chemistry, its mystic and Hermetic aspects became the focus of a modern Spiritual Alchemy, where material manipulations are viewed as mere symbols of spiritual transformations.
Nevertheless, alchemy was one of the main precursors of modern sciences, and we owe to the ancient alchemists the discovery of many substances and processes that are the mainstay of modern chemical and metallurgical industries.

 Shakespeare and Astrology
Astrology and alchemy have rarely been used as springboards into literature, although both are symbolic languages and would thus seem naturally suited for unlocking the deeper meanings in Shakespeare’s plays.
In alchemy, Mercury has both male and female aspects: Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet is androgynous—there are even suggestions in the play that he is gay (the word “hermaphrodite,” meaning both sexes in one body, is a fusion of Hermes and Aphrodite).
Shakespeare used the symbolism of alchemy and the language of the planets and stars to finally bring a “glooming peace” to a small town in a foreign land where golden statues glitter under a starry sky.

New Haverford Professor Brings Witchcraft, Astrology, and Alchemy to the Classroom
Hayton and his students are knee-deep in the astrology section of one of Haverford’s newest courses: History of the Occult and Witchcraft.
In a section on alchemy, Hayton wants to combat the notion that “alchemy was that ridiculous activity people did until they invented chemistry.” According to Hayton, some of the most fortunate and intelligent people in the late 16th and early 17th centuries were alchemists.
He hopes that studying the history of alchemy—how it was invented, who became alchemists, why alchemy was a widely respected science—will help elucidate the widely held notions that people held regarding scientific practices during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Marsilio Ficino, the great Renaissance philosopher and astrologer, was asked by his Medici patron to put aside all other work to translate the Corpus Hermeticum, series of treatises attributed to Hermes Trismegistus.
The availability of the complete Corpus Hermeticum in Latin set off an explosion of interest in Hermetic philosophy and the three allied esoteric fields of astrology, alchemy and magic.
Without this unity we could not accomplish the mystic union, but it also makes possible the spiritual connection, without which magic, astrology and alchemy could not function.
