ipedia.com: Extrasolar planet Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Extrasolar planets were first discovered during the 1990s as a result of improved telescope technology, such as CCD and computer-based image processing along with the Hubble Space Telescope.
One possible answer to these unexpected planetary orbits is that since astrometrics detects the extrasolar planets due to their gravitational influences and partially-ecliptic interference, perhaps current technology only permits the detection of systems where a large planet is close to the orbited star, rather than such systems being the norm.
The frequency of extrasolar planets is one of the parameters in the Drake equation, which attempts to estimate the probability of communications with extraterrestrial intelligence.

Astrometrics is a skill you NEED to use a Jumpdrive.
Basically, once you select the place you want to jump to from a special map, your ship "scans" the area with a particle beam, and then depending on your skill level it could take minutes or days to charge your drives, time also depends on distance.
I have no hard information on astrometrics, but it could cover some other aspect of jumpdrives than what Jump Drive Operations covers.

We do know science will probably be handling communcations and this is something that was often done via the Astrometrics lab on Voyager, indeed- as well as scanning and adapting new technology.
We've seen an Astrometrics lab on the Enterprise D, which I would say is a little more impressive than the one on Voyager, and I think we even saw a scaled down version in Nemesis, when Data was with Picard planning their trip through the Nebula.
Since science may be my class of choice, this subject intrigues me. I was actually taking for granted that astrometrics would be a given on the larger ships or science vessels.
