Astronaut (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the band's first studio album since Pop Trash (2000), and the first since Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983) to be recorded by the original five members of the band (the last studio recording of the original five was the "A View to a Kill" single [1985]).
Astronaut debuted at #1 on the Internet album chart (that is, physical albums bought through Internet vendors), #3 in the UK album chart, and at #17 in the US Billboard 200 album chart, with similar Top Twenty debuts elsewhere in the world.

Pop Trash is an album released in 2000 by Duran Duran.
The album marked their first release not under Capitol Records/EMI, with whom they'd been signed since 1981.
During the making of this album, Simon Le Bon suffered from a severe case of writer's block, so keyboard player Nick Rhodes and guitarist Warren Cuccurullo took on more of the songwriting than usual.

astronaut fuses the sounds of their alt/post-grunge/punk predecessors, pushing sweet-but-fierce vocals to soar with fast-and-furious, 70s-infused guitar licks and a rhythm section that will give you a run for your money.
Blasting on to the New York music scene in early 2003, astronaut, with its wistful melodies, strong vocals, and complementary rhythms, is making its mark locally and nationally with a growing fan base and critical acclaim for its songs.
Since astronaut sold out the ultra-hip Pianos back in March, they continue to pack houses, performing at such NYC landmarks as the Knitting Factory, CB's Gallery, Galapagos and Northsix, where they opened for Head of Femur. With their songs likened to "Radiohead...

Duran Duran: Astronaut - review of Duran Duran's new album featuring Sunrise
Astronaut marks the return of Duran Duran under its original line-up.
Despite the release of several albums in the 90's, the band hadn't been able to successfully bridge the gap between the 80's and the 21st century, except for The Wedding Album and the "White Lines" cover, which for a brief moment reminded us that they were still able to cut catchy glitz-pop tunes.
The proof is certainly "Sunrise", the anthemic album opener, which is certainly their catchiest single since "A View To A Kill".

Rio was one of the first albums I ever remember truly loving, and their change in direction to a more Brit-pop/rock sound starting with "the Wedding Album" didn't bother me at all.

While the Power Station's self titled album found Andy and John moving further afield from Duran Duran's signature sound, with an intriguing hybrid of funk and glamrock, Acardia's album 'So Red the Rose' was a sublime reaffirmation of the mother ship's style.
Better known as the 'Wedding Album' (because the album artwork featured photos of their parents' weddings) the CD spawned the award winning smash 'Ordinary World' and its equally acclaimed follow-up 'Come Undone'.

Over the years it (Lagwagon) became somewhat of a family, whereas with Bad Astronaut, it's more of a group of friends who like to turn each other on with different records, and we all sort of come from our own specialties and connect with some sort of common denominator.

Unlike the group's more "mature" '90s offerings, 2004's ASTRONAUT eschews "adult alternative" trappings in favor of a return to their earlier bold, fun-loving sound, a move that couldn't have been better timed, considering the concurrent '80s-revival craze.
ASTRONAUT appeared on the horizon as an alert to '80s-worshipping young bands that the men who wrote the book were back in action.

In fact, “Astronaut” is easily their most ebullient record in many years.
That covers the “upbeat” side of things but “Astronaut” is very much a double-sided coin as the second half of the album is far more mature sounding than the earlier tracks and reminiscent of the 90’s era Duran.
One of the best things about “Astronaut” is that it also leaves one with the sense that they are moving ahead, that the next record will in a totally different place, perhaps a bit more experimental than they are here.

The album is a swath of effects-layered, slow- to mid-tempo songs, ranging from radio-friendly pop anthems like leadoff single “Sunrise” to more groovy and disco-influenced numbers like “Nice,” which recall the group’s early ’80s work on “Rio.”
That said, “Astronaut” is not exactly a return to roots — at least four tracks feel so contemporary, they would sound at home on a Jamiroquai or Backstreet Boys album.
Williams’ debut album is somewhere in that increasingly popular netherworld between alt-country and throaty, gentle folk rock — a hybrid that offers up wisps of Lucinda Williams, the nonpreachy songs of Natalie Merchant and even a bit of REM.
