  Astronaut Interview
That is why it was possiblle for the astronauts who walked on the Moon to be able to walk with their space suits.
Astronauts do need to stay in good physical shape, we spend a fair amount of time at the gym, running, playing ball, excercising, keeping ourselves in good shape to be able to fly.
On our flight a Japanese astronaut drove the robot arm that's attached to the shuttle and we use it to attach to satellites that are flying in space and then bring them down into the payload bay of the space shuttle.

As the Apollo program continued to evolve, NASA faced an ever increasing tide of criticism over the fact that the astronaut corps was dominated by military pilots and contained no women.
For this reason, NASA issued a call for astronaut candidates that would serve as "Scientist Astronauts".
In the end, only six Scientist Astronauts were selected, and the National Academy of Science issued a statement saying the overall quality of the candidates was "disappointing".

Arithmetic tasks were performed about equally well by all groups, and some highly motivated subjects could work 16 hr/day on the 4:2 schedule with essentially no decrements over a period of at least 15 days, and possibly for as long as 30 days.
In the event that the reserve capacities of the astronaut are depleted because of either overloading during emergencies (e.g., continuous performance of highly complex tasks) or underloading during mission cruise phases (when few task demands are placed on the operator), we can anticipate that fatigue may be a problem.
A maximum duty period of 4 hr is the most efficient when a passive task is combined with one or more active tasks, the workload is not too great, and a high level of performance must be maintained.

The Mercury Astronaut is in nearly continuous touch with the ground stations and has need for only limited provisions for habitability because he need neither eat, sleep, eliminate waste, nor find relaxation during programed missions.
This will mean, for example, that a healthy astronaut leaving on such a voyage could, by exposure to his crew members and the bacteria that each brings to the cabin, become quite ill during the flight time unless provisions are made within the environmental control system and through medications placed onboard to control such events.
The maximum allowable dosage permissible for an astronaut has been discussed with many experts within the United States, and the general concensus of opinion is that 25 REM is the upper limit.

Astronauts (and cosmonauts) are people specially trained to work in space, spending weeks or months carrying out mission tasks and research in science on a space station or spacecraft.
The term "astronaut" derives from the Greek words meaning "space sailor," and refers to all who have been launched as crew members aboard NASA spacecraft bound for orbit and beyond.
Each astronaut carries an instrument to measure their exposure to this radiation, which limits the amount of time that astronauts can spend in orbit.

For the most part, "cosmonaut" and "astronaut" are synonyms in all languages, and the usage of choice is often dictated by political reasons.
However in the United States, the term "astronaut" is typically applied to the individual as soon as training begins, while in Russia, an individual is not labelled a cosmonaut until successful space flight.
The first astronauts, both in the USA and USSR, tended to be jet fighter pilots, often test pilots, from military backgrounds.
