Topic: Astronomical catalogues

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

VOTable: an XML data format for virtual astronomy
Catalogues, that is tables of the properties of celestial objects (celestial coordinates, brightness etc.), are very important in astronomy and constitute a significant component of the Virtual Observatory.
Astronomical catalogues are tables of the positions and measured properties (such as brightness) of a list of celestial objects.
Astronomical catalogues, like other astronomical and, indeed, scientific data, are usually rich in metadata, and these metadata are needed to interpret the catalogues correctly.

Object-Relational DBMSs for Large Astronomical Catalogue Management
Astronomical catalogues containing from a million up to hundreds of millions of records are becoming commonplace.
Since even larger catalogues will be released in a few years, researchers are faced with the problem of accessing these databases in a general but efficient manner, in order to be able to fully exploit their scientific content.
Large astronomical catalogues, with one million up to hundreds of millions of records, are becoming commonplace (e.g., Tycho, GSC I, USNO-1.A).

 astronomical catalogues
More than 2,000 astronomical catalogues and data tables are in use; the older method of printing catalogues has been superceded by storing them on compact disks and as computer databases, which can be accessed over the Internet.
Different catalogues have been compiled for different types of objects, parts of the sky, regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and so forth.
The ones listed here are particularly important because of their generality or frequency of use, or for historical reasons.

Most of the CDS catalogues are available on-line, and have standard documentation and format, following the Standard Description for Astronomical Catalogues.
These catalogues and datasets are currently distributed on magnetic tape, diskettes, CD-ROMs, or via network.
Scientists producing new datasets or astronomical catalogues are encouraged to make their computer-readable material and documentation available for distribution to the worldwide astronomical community, by depositing a copy in one of the international astronomical data centers.

Information Extraction: New Developments in Astronomical Information Retrieval for Electronic Publications
In the astronomical community, the scientific literature and the data that support the research are well-defined and electronically available.
These services give access both to astronomical catalogues and published tables, thanks to the definition of a common standard which is used both by data centers and publishers.
Astronomical object name extraction can be done by the authors and publishers in parallel with automatic techniques, but an expert will still have to control that information.

Subsets comprising all the objects in a remote catalogue lying within a given angular distance of a given point on the celestial sphere can be extracted and saved as a local catalogue.
Most of the catalogues are located at either the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at Garching, or the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.
The catalogues at Leicester are a copy of the catalogues provided by the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and form a particularly extensive collection.

But catalogues have not to stay in this J section for ever: later, more "con- sistent" catalogues could be generated from one or several publications - long observation sets are frequently published in several papers.

We consider here ``astronomical catalogues'' as static, final compilations of data for a given set of cosmic objects.
However, catalogues prepared in such a way (as stated in the accompanying documentation file) should be treated with some caution, since OCR is never really free of errors and careful proof-reading is necessary to confirm its conformity with the original.
This directory is further subdivided into nine sections of catalogues (from stellar to high-energy data), and the ``J'' directory for smaller tables from journals.

I did narrow-band imaging of ionized regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (Prog ID 68.C-0019(A)) with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at the 2.2m telescope of the La Silla Observatory, Chile.
The purpose of this work was to build a Master Catalogue of stars towards the Magellanic Clouds (MC2) based on multiwavelength cross-identification of several astronomical catalogues: DENIS, 2MASS, GSC-II, UCAC1.
The MC2 provides an unprecedented basis for the study of stellar populations in the Magellanic Clouds and for further cross-identifications with catalogues at other wavelengths.

VizieR provides access to the most complete library of published astronomical catalogues and data tables available on line, organized in a self-documented database.
Specific care has been taken for optimizing access to some very large catalogues such as UCAC2, the USNO-B1, or the 2MASS last release.
Note that VizieR does not contain all available online catalogues; some catalogues are not suitable and some less frequently used catalogues have not yet been incorporated into the VizieR database.
