Asturcon: Outside of Britain, there are few European pony breeds of note in the modern context.
The Bardigiano is a mountain breed from the northern Appenine region of Italy.
Like the Asturcon, it resembles to a degree the oldest of the British native ponies, the Exmoor, and there is probably some common Celtic pony root stock.

The Bardiagiano has a distinct connection with the Avelignese.
There is also mention of the Bardiagiano being linked with the Asturcon ponies and the Exmoor ponies, as they are similar in appearance.
Modern Bardigiano today are primarily in the highlands of the northern Appenines, which lie between Venetia and Tuscany.The Bardigiano is a working mountain pony much like the Haflinger and the Avelignese.

Interestingly one of these haplogroups, which represents half of the Lusitano maternal lines, is characteristic of horses from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, supporting the idea that this area may have been a center of domestication for equines (Lopes et al 2005).
Here, we present new mitochondrial D-loop sequences from the Spanish breeds: Asturcon, Burguete, Jaca Navarra, Losino Mallorquina, Marismeno, Menorquina and Pottoka.
The phylogenetic analysis of these data with other mitochondrial D-loop available in GenBank will help understanding the origin of the Iberian horse breed.
