The Asylum and Immigration Tribunal (also known as the AIT) is an independent body which hears appeals against decisions made by the Home Secretary to refuse a person asylum in the UK or to refuse entry or leave to remain and decisions to deport.
The Immigration Appellate Authority (also known as the IAA) was the predecessor of the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal.
Immigration judges are experienced lawyers and both they and the non-legal members of the Tribunal are independent of the government.

The unnamed man would be at risk of harm if he were sent back, the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal has ruled.
Tribunal chairman Mark Ockelton said the man, known only as 'AA', had a "well-founded fear of persecution" if he was returned, even though his asylum claim had been "fraudulent" and his dealings with UK authorities "deliberately dishonest".
The tribunal had not found that Zimbabwe was unsafe generally for failed asylum seekers, or for those who returned voluntarily, she said.

These Rules amend the Rules of the Supreme Court (Northern Ireland) 1980 ('the principal rules') to prescribe the procedure relating to applications for statutory review and appeals under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, as amended by the Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc.) Act 2004.
