Asymptote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An asymptote is a straight line or curve which a curve approaches as one moves along the curve.
A specific example of asymptotes can be found in the graph of the function f(x) = 1/x, in which two asymptotes are seen: the horizontal line y = 0 and the vertical line x = 0.
Asymptotes of a graph of a function need not be parallel to the x- or y-axis, as shown by the graph of f(x)=x +1/x, which is asymptotic to the y-axis and the line y = x.

Eine Asymptote ist eine Gerade, der sich die Funktionswerte einer Funktion beliebig weit annähern, diese jedoch nie erreichen.

The x and y axes are asymptotes to the graph of xy = constant (a rectangular hyperbola).
If a point on a curve approaches a straight line such that its distance from the straight line is d, then the line is an asymptote to the curve if limit d tends to zero as the point moves towards infinity.
Among conic sections (curves obtained by the intersection of a plane and a double cone), a hyperbola has two asymptotes, which in the case of a rectangular hyperbola are at right angles to each other.

Asymptote: FLUX - Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid :: books at arcspace.com
In mathematical terms, the word "asymptote" is defined as a line that a given curve gets closer and closer to, but never touches, as it gets further from the origin towards infinity.
In architectural terms, Asymptote is the Manhattan-based architectural design and research practice established by Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid in 1989.
Echoing Asymptote's approach, this book presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer generated diagrams and environments, all in color.

Near a vertical asymptote x is bounded and y grows without bound, so the left side grows without bound.
Then the equations of the asymptotes will have the form: 0*x + 1*y = C or 1*x + 0*y = C that is, y = C or x = C. Thus in this case, the asymptotes are either horizontal or vertical.
Thus the horizontal asymptote is y = 0.

 Asymptotes: Examples
The vertical asymptotes (and any restrictions on the domain) come from the zeroes of the denominator, so I'll set the denominator equal to zero and solve.
Since the degree of the numerator is one greater than the degree of the denominator, I'll have a slant asymptote (not a horizontal one), and I'll find the slant asymptote by long division.
This last case is not the norm for slant asymptotes, but you should expect to see at least one problem of this type, including perhaps on the test.

 Horizontal Asymptotes
Whereas vertical asymptotes are sacred ground, horizontal asymptotes are just useful suggestions.
Whereas vertical asymptotes indicate very specific behavior (on the graph), usually close to the origin, horizontal asymptotes indicate general behavior far off to the sides of the graph.
In this example, the degree on the numerator and denominator was the same, and the horizontal asymptote was the horizontal line found by dividing the leading coefficients of the two polynomials.
