 Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line
The twisted copper line was developed in the previous century and is not adequate for the increasing amounts of data that need to be transmitted over the internet.
These telephone lines seem like they would be a logical choice for a connection to the internet for anyone with telephone access in the world.
The ADSL modems can adapt to varying signal conditions on the line and adjust the rate of transfer to be optimum for those conditions, reducing the error rate of the transmission.

A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) is a network device, usually at a telephone company central office, that receives signals from multiple customer Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections and puts the signals on a high-speed backbone line (mostly ATM networks) using multiplexing techniques.
Digital Subscriber Line (x)DSL is a generic abbreviation for a range of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology.
A Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) is a symmetrical form of (x)DSL and is commonly implemented according to the G.shdsl standards.

UMUC-Verizon Virtual Resource Site -- Module 1: Description of Synchronous Communication
Because this technology is usually delivered over digital subscriber lines rather than through the Web, it is beyond the scope of this project.
Synchronous, or real-time, communication has yet to emerge as a popular technology in online education, but the likely merging of Web and audio/video delivery formats over time may, if successful and affordable, effectively virtualize education on a global scale.
MOOs and chat rooms often have their own sound effects to denote communicative gestures (such as laughter and surprise); to use or hear them, the computer must be equipped with a sound card and speakers.

Whirlpool News - Telstra warns against VDSL
VDSL, a form of Digital Subscriber Line technology offering speeds of up to 22Mbps has been slammed as premature by Telstra's Chief Technology Officer, Dr Hugh Bradlow, in an article in Australian IT.
But while asynchronous would be more suitable for consumers and synchronous more suitable for businesses, Mr Bradlow said both could not be offered concurrently.
"It's not even standardised yet." Mr Bradlow said one of the biggest problems was that there were two ways of deploying VDSL which were not compatible.
