Category:Communication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Communication is the process of exchanging information between entities.
In a protocol, communication sent one-way is a message; a set of messages back and forth between one entity and another constitute a session of conversation.
Communication is the academic discipline which studies communication.

Opinion: The Importance of Being Synchronous
Asynchronous communication, on the other hand, is communication that can wait.
This was a totally asynchronous class, and clearly it did not really meet the learning needs of this student, though he did complete the class (Dorociak, 2000).
My point here is that computer-mediated communication, just like a FTF classroom setting, can be asynchronous or synchronous, and that we as teachers need to think about the nature of student-teacher and student-student communication and how that fits into our teaching objectives.

Serial communication normally consists of transmitting binary data across an electrical or optical link such as RS232 or V.35.
In synchronous communications, data is not sent in individual bytes, but as frames of large data blocks.
The protocols supported by Sangoma communications objects are nearly all synchronous, and most are based on HDLC framing.

Quatech | Asynchronous Serial Communication Overview
Asynchronously transmitted data is preceded with a start bit which indicates to the receiver that a word (a chunk of data broken up into individual bits) is about to begin.

 Asynchronous Communication
The asynchronous communication technique is a transmission technique which is most widely used by personal computers to provide connectivity to printers, modems, fax machines, etc. This allows a series of bytes (or ASCII characters) to be sent along a single wire (actually a ground wire is required to complete the circuit).
The principle difference between the synchronous and asynchronous modes of transmission is that in the synchronous case, the receiver uses a clock which is synchronised to the transmitter clock.
The most significant aspect of asynchronous communications is that the transmitter and receiver clock are independent and are not synchronised.

Asynchronous communication, in particular, is one of the most versatile tools we have at our disposal.
Recent research that explores asynchronous communication in the online learning environment in higher education has highlighted a number of issues that must be considered if we are to design communication environments that offer a fair and equitable arena for all participants (Barraket et al.
Whilst the B.A. Community and Environment (BA) was developed primarily for students in the UOW South Coast Network of Education Access Centres and the course as a whole is only available from those centres, many of the subjects are on offer to internal students at Wollongong.

I begin by considering what it is that teams do as they work, and describe the communication technologies which are available to face-to-face and currently to my online teams, and the comparative weakness of the latter in supporting the demands of team communication.
Although this was primarily intended to allow students who were unable to get on the network to communicate with their teams, students were also encouraged to use the phone when a dyadic conversation might move things ahead.
Certainly the messages here seem ambivalent: liking the asynchronicity, but wanting some meetings to be at one place and time; liking the friendships and relations developed in teams, but discomfort with the impersonality of the online media.

Communication could occur at three levels: at a general level within the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) conference, which was used by all students enrolled in the BCom program; at a more discipline specific level within the unit of study; and at the accompanying tutorial group.
Communication was highest when the assessable exercises were due; that is during the first half of semester.
Despite this, it was surprising that the communication decreased to the extent observed, as the expectation was that students would continue to use the established groups for communication with both teaching staff and other students, particularly when completing revision.

On the WWW some communication facilities are available, for instance it is possible to put your comments on a web-page in a synchronous or asynchronous manner and other people can add their comments.
In asynchronous communication on the other hand the learner has more time to think about his contribution, but their is less pressure to respond.
Other advantages are that communication is possible with a group of people and with one person, files can be send in real time, it is an inexpensive tool and it can be motivating for the students, because they have a sense of real communication.

 Asynchronous Communication
Unlike other communications tools that have been used in distance education settings, Internet-based tools facilitate multi-way communication in ways that are effective for both students and instructors (Hiltz, 1998).
The types of asynchronous communication made possible through the Internet increase overall access to educational opportunities (Bannon, 1989; Curtis and Lawson, 2001; Dillenbourg and Schneider, n.d.; Hiltz, 1998), by overcoming the need for limited and more costly communications resources, as well as the barriers of distance and scheduling.
Asynchronous communication tools allow participants to interact free of barriers such as time and distance (Hiltz, 1998).

In this thesis, different types of group communication on the Internet are presented and a two month empirical study conducted analyzing the two main types of group communication: asynchronous and synchronous.
Because this thesis aims to study two types of communities: a chat-room-based synchronous community and a message-board-based asynchronous community, it is useful to understand how groups form, how they stay cohesive, and what factors influence their development.
The most essential element of community is continuity, and to measure whether or not the message board and chat rooms have achieved any level of community, it will be necessary to measure the continuity of interaction.

 Asynchronous Communication between Tasks
For this reason most executives provide mechanisms for asynchronous communication, where only one task (often called the receiver) needs to wait.
If this is not required then another asynchronous communication mechanism, the event flag (or event flag group) may be used.
The sending task doesn't wait for the receiving task and so the communication is asynchronous.

Asynchronous Communications Guide - Serial Communication
The term asynchronous is used to describe the process where transmitted data is encoded with start and stop bits, specifying the beginning and end of each character as shown in the following figure.
The baud rate is the number of times per second a serial communication signal changes states; a state being either a voltage level, a frequency, or a frequency phase angle.
The start and stop bits are used in asynchronous communication as a means of timing or synchronizing the data characters being transmitted.

What is asynchronous? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The term asynchronous is usually used to describe communications in which data can be transmitted intermittently rather than in a steady stream.
The difficulty with asynchronous communications is that the receiver must have a way to distinguish between valid data and noise.
In computer communications, this is usually accomplished through a special start bit and stop bit at the beginning and end of each piece of data.

Article: Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication Tools   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Asynchronous tools are useful for sustaining dialogue and collaboration over a period of time and providing people with resources and information that are instantly accessible, day or night.
In addition, asynchronous tools are helpful in capturing the history of the interactions of a group, allowing for collective knowledge to be more easily shared and distributed.
The primary drawback of asynchronous technologies is that they require some discipline to use when used for ongoing communities of practice (e.g., people typically must take the initiative to "login" to participate) and they may feel "impersonal" to those who prefer higher-touch synchronous technologies.

 Asynchronous Diffusive Load Balancing (ADLB)
The combination of asynchronous communication functionality and nonblocking, persistent communication functionality not only provides for cheaper communication operations by eliminating communication idle states, but also, by breaking process synchronization, makes the sequence of events in the load balancing scheme flexible by allowing overlap of communication and computation.
In addition to the cheaper and more flexible communication scheme, we incorporate into the ADLB approach two new strategies to try to reduce the demand for communication and thereby try to achieve a higher overall performance.
Because the ADLB scheme is asynchronous, the detection of global termination is a more complex issue than in the synchronous case.

Method for asynchronous application communication - Patent 5327558
This invention relates generally to data communication and, in particular, to a method for enabling a general-purpose subscriber unit, such as a portable computer, to receive and transmit messages to and from applications in background mode.
In communication systems where each subscriber unit executes one or more application software packages which share a communication device, means are necessary to provide centralized control of the shared device, to loosen coupling between communications functions and applications, to multiplex messages from applications to the device, and to route received messages to the appropriate application.
Thus there is a significant need for communication programs that enable asynchronous communication between any of a plurality of software applications and a selected one of a variety of types of communication devices (e.g.

Direct communication, where all parties involved in the communication are present at the same time (an event) is a form of synchronous communication.
Asynchronous communication does not require that all parties involved in the communication need to be present and available at the same time.
Examples of this include e-mail (the receiver does not have to be logged on when the sender sends the e-mail message), discussion boards, which allow conversations to evolve and community to develop over a period of time, and text messaging over cell phones.

UMUC-Verizon Virtual Resource Site -- Module 1: Description of Synchronous Communication
Synchronous, or real-time, communication has yet to emerge as a popular technology in online education, but the likely merging of Web and audio/video delivery formats over time may, if successful and affordable, effectively virtualize education on a global scale.
In both kinds of synchronous communication, users connect with the help of chat-client software and log in to virtual "rooms" where they communicate with each other by typing onscreen.
MOOs and chat rooms often have their own sound effects to denote communicative gestures (such as laughter and surprise); to use or hear them, the computer must be equipped with a sound card and speakers.
