 Flann O'Brien: At Swim-Two-Birds
Two days later I was cow-punching down by the river in Ringsend with Shorty Andrews and Slug Willard, the toughest pair of boyos you'd meet in a day's walk.
These two principles of novelistic creation are to be linked with a third notion, one which answers the question: What actually happens when a writer creates a new character?
The entire corpus of existing literature should be regarded as a limbo from which discerning authors could draw their characters as required, creating only when they failed to find a suitable existing puppet.

At Swim-Two-Birds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
American writer Gilbert Sorrentino paid homage to the book with his sprawling 1979 novel Mulligan Stew, itself a novel about the writing of a novel, with characters drawn from other works (including At Swim-Two-Birds) who wreak havoc upon the fictional author and the text itself.
While O'Nolan wrote other novels, none achieved either the level of complexity or playfulness of At Swim-Two-Birds, and thus his accomplishments have not been as recognized as those of his contemporaries.
Interlaced with the two interior fictions is the author's college career through a term at school.

At Swim, Two Birds, is the title of one of FOB’s books.) I loved the liberties JON took with language.
Incidentally, the question of the Irishmen who fought and died for the British Empire in two world wars remains a vexed one- the government of the Republic is reluctant to acknowledge their sacrifice and I don't believe that there is any official memorial.
Two Dublin boys would fall in love, and in their friendship discover their country, a country whose freedom was worth their fight." R There is nothing to do with a day except to live it.

Jamie O'Neill / At Swim, Two Boys / reviews / US
Two boys swim out from the Forty Foot, a “gentlemen’s bathing-place” on the rocky Dublin shore, to plant the Irish flag on tiny islands where once either rebel patriots or doubtful pirates were abandoned, depending on whose legends you believe.
This swim is what Jim Mack and his friend Doyler have promised each other, a deliberate risk in tricky seas, but that is the least of their promises: each is giving his whole self to the other.
Ultimately, however, as it traces the growing love between two young Irishmen and the growth of their political and nationalist consciousness, it is clear that Jamie O’Neill has written something new and significant – the novel that might have happened, as one commentator put it, if Joyce and Oscar Wilde had had a son.

This thesis is an analysis of the two surviving typescripts of Flann O'Brien's At Swim-Two-Birds.
After a brief overview of both typescripts, the thesis focuses on the earlier of the two, especially its use of pink paper, and suggests (based on subject matter, pagination, and stylistic patterns) that the pink pages were written before the typescript's white pages, and therefore that they represent O'Brien's earliest conception of the novel.

Comparisons between At Swim, Two Boys and Joyce are inevitable, (and if the title echoes Flann O’Brien’s At Swim, Two Birds, the text certainly doesn’t) but a more relevant exemplar would be Dickens.
At Swim, Two Boys is the story of the love between two Dublin boys set against a backdrop of political and moral rebellion and repression.
At Swim, Two Boys is a masterpiece which manages to combine accessibility and readability with erudition and verbal pyrotechnics.

Literary Encyclopedia: At Swim Two Birds
As At Swim's Brinsley remarks: “There are two ways to make big money […] to write a book or to make a book” (24), and his student friend seems to follow the latter path.
At Swim pitches Irish mythological heroes into contemporary Dublin and careers wildly between literary (and non-literary) styles; it presents a cruelly bathetic portrait of the artist and even masquerades as a 'work in progress' – the title under which portions of Finnegans Wake (1939) were published during the 1920s and 1930s.
The frame for At Swim's many narratives is an autobiographical portrait of the artist as a young student in 1930s Dublin.
