	Atafu Island, Tokelau
		Atafu or Duke of York Island is the north-western atoll of the Tokelau or Union group.
		The village is on the north-western islet, Atafu.
		Later Atafu was used periodically as a fishing base for expeditions from Fakaofo; and finally drought, hurricane, and over-population on the latter island brought about a new permanent settlement.

	About Tokelau
		Atafu is composed of 42 islands and lies in lat.
		Atafu was the ancient name given the atoll by its earliest inhabitants, and these people were forced to abandon the island and some were killed during the era of warring period between the Islands of Tokelau.
		Atafu has been blessed with the abundance of the Kanava tree (Cordia subcordata), the wood which is used for building the canoes, that is lacking on the other atolls.

		This may be related to the lower densities seen in Atafu and possibly more nutrients in Atafu lagoon than the other atoll lagoons [the lagoon clarity in Atafu was considerably less than any part of Fakaofo or Nukunonu lagoons indicating a greater tendency toward eutrophication in Atafu lagoon].

		Samoa, Rarotonga and Nanumanga in the Tuvalu group are all described in traditions as "homelands", and it is likely that early settlers of the three atolls came from each of those places.
		French Catholic missionaries on Wallis islands (Uvea) and missionaries of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in Samoa use native teachers in attempts to convert the Tokelauans to Christianity.
		The population of Atafu becomes converted by the LMS and those on Nukunonu become Catholics.
