Atafu or Duke of York Island is the north-western atoll of the Tokelau or Union group.
The village is on the north-western islet, Atafu.
Later Atafu was used periodically as a fishing base for expeditions from Fakaofo; and finally drought, hurricane, and over-population on the latter island brought about a new permanent settlement.

Atafu is composed of 42 islands and lies in lat.
Atafu was the ancient name given the atoll by its earliest inhabitants, and these people were forced to abandon the island and some were killed during the era of warring period between the Islands of Tokelau.
Atafu has been blessed with the abundance of the Kanava tree (Cordia subcordata), the wood which is used for building the canoes, that is lacking on the other atolls.

This may be related to the lower densities seen in Atafu and possibly more nutrients in Atafu lagoon than the other atoll lagoons [the lagoon clarity in Atafu was considerably less than any part of Fakaofo or Nukunonu lagoons indicating a greater tendency toward eutrophication in Atafu lagoon].
Atafu is a small lagoon and still has considerable coral areas, though not as much as Fakaofo, may have more natural microalgae in the water column for the pearl oysters to feed on, and there are much lower numbers of spondylid oysters than in Fakaofo.
In Atafu he suggested the southeast end (close to where I have suggested a clam reserve be established) and on the mid-north-east side.

Atafu, located 87 km northwest from the atoll of Nukunonu, is the smallest and northernmost of Tokelau's three atolls, measuring up to 5.5 km east to west and up to 6.5 km north to south.
There are 42 islets situated around the central lagoon of 17 km², with a combined land area of 3.5 km².
The only inhabited part of the atoll is the village of Atafu, located in the northwest (at top in this image).

Atafu, the smallest of the atolls - it's lagoon totals only 17 square km (compared to 50 square km on Fakaofo and 98 square km at Nukunonu).
The formalities were quickly dispensed with as everyone eagerly crowded the gangway to be first on land and though a few of us took the opportunity to ride aboard the barge, most of us selected the Zodiacs as our preferred mode of transport.
Led to the pier by a pod of dolphins, we were greeted with a mass of smiling faces as the elders of Atafu led the islanders in a heartfelt greeting to this rarely visited outpost.

Tokelau is made up of three classic atolls - Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu - each a necklace of tiny islets surrounding a central lagoon.
The three atolls themselves are by no means close neighbours: Atafu and Nukunonu are separated by 92km (57mi) of lonely South Pacific Ocean, and it's another 64km (40mi) south-east to Fakaofo.
As with all coral atolls, the soil is thin, infertile and poorly drained.

Samoa, Rarotonga and Nanumanga in the Tuvalu group are all described in traditions as "homelands", and it is likely that early settlers of the three atolls came from each of those places.
French Catholic missionaries on Wallis islands (Uvea) and missionaries of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in Samoa use native teachers in attempts to convert the Tokelauans to Christianity.
The population of Atafu becomes converted by the LMS and those on Nukunonu become Catholics.

Gordon Macgregor states that it is 60 miles N.W. of Fakaofu, and that local ship captains say the map position is from 14 to 16 miles too far east, as they have to make a correction accordingly when laying a course for the island.
The atoll is said to have a land area of 1,350 acres.
The sea birds, hermit crabs, rats, and insects are thought to be about the same as on other similar central Pacific islands; and there is abundant marine life about the fringing reef, and in the shallow lagoon, which contains reefs and coral heads.

The land "ATAFU" is claimed by both parties, and the boundaries of the land, as given in the complaint, are admitted by the defendant, Vae.
The complaint was dismissed because it was evident that Alo Taisi had not been "in the possession of" the land ATAFU, and had not been "using the fruits thereof openly and notoriously" for a period of more than one year prior to the enactment of the Regulation - July 27th, 1907.

The higher hair content of mercury, lead and cadmium found among Atafu subjects might be due to consumption of marine foods contaminated with metals, consumption of canned foods, or frequent cigarette smoking, though it is difficult to single out any specific factor.
