  Summary on the Atalanti fault
Macroseismic locations of the shocks are close to the town of Atalanti for the second and to the south and east of it, in the area of the Malessina peninsula, for the first.
The Atalanti fault trace can be well recognized in the geomorphology between the towns of Atalanti and Larymna (figure 3.3.2) where it appears as a typical normal fault bounding a range front which has the highest elevations in the central and western parts (figure 3.3.3).
The April 27 earthquake ruptured the Atalanti fault that is the major structure in the area.

e-Prints Soton - Coastal wetlands as records of earthquake subsidence in the Aegean: a case study of the 1894 Gulf of ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
In the area of the Gulf of Atalanti, central Greece, a damaging earthquake sequence in 1894 is reported to have caused nearshore slumping, tsunami-induced flooding, and decimetre-to metre-scale coastal subsidence.
Detailed stratigraphical, microfossil and radiometric (210Pb and 137Cs) analyses of coastal wetlands around the Gulf of Atalanti show that these environments preserve evidence of sudden, lasting subsidence contemporaneous with the 1894 events, with foraminiferal assemblages at a site on the mainland opposite the island indicating an abrupt change from supratidal soil to intertidal marine conditions.
The coastal stratigraphy in the Atalanti area however lacks laterally extensive sharp soil–mud contacts or tsunami deposits of the type used in identifying past earthquake subsidence events at plate–boundary settings.

On the basis of the extent and size of the rupture recognized in the field, a M 6.8 is estimated for the second and largest shock.

Segment boundaries, the 1894 ruptures and strain patterns along the Atalanti Fault, Central Greece   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
The Atalanti Fault is a large active normal fault segment inside the Gulf of Evia Rift system (Central Greece), that last ruptured during the April 1894 earthquake sequence.
Using structural and geomorphological interpretations of digitally processed Landsat TM satellite imagery, two regions of i) low topography, ii) minimum hinterland development and iii) transverse bedrock ridge development, 34 kilometres apart were identified; these regions are suggested to be segment boundaries constraining the length of the fault.
The surface break is only preserved locally where the footwall comprises a resistant bedrock lithology (limestone), whilst the rest of the rupture noted in historical records propagated along the contact with the volcanic pre-rift, as well as within the syn-rift, and has since been eradicated due to man-made changes in surface morphology.

The 20 and 27 April 1894 (Locris, Central Greece) earthquake sources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Our preferred interpretation is that the 20 and 27 April earthquakes ruptured together the whole Atalanti fault.
The internal structural complexity of the Atalanti fault appears to have controlled the rupture propagation: the change in strike of the fault trace along with its intersection with the Malesina fault, near Proskinas, is interpreted as a geometric barrier which is the boundary between the two individual earthquake sources.
The 20 April earthquake would have ruptured between Proskinas and Skroponeri Mt., southeast of the village of Larymna, whereas the 27 April earthquake ruptured between Proskinas and the NW Chlomon fault zone, north of the town of Atalanti.
