AGH Museum -- Atari CX-2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Atari's 2600 machine is feeling the heat from rival videogame systems, and Atari desperately needs to cut costs in order for the venerable machine to remain the price leader.
The Atari 2000 system differed in marketing strategy from the 2600jr model that was released later in the 2600's lifetime.
First of all, the 2000 was meant as a complimentary machine to the 2600, not as a replacement.

 The Atari CX-2000 Prototype
Apparently Atari under Warner Communications was concerned about all the competition from other system manufacturers and commissioned a new low cost 2600 to be designed in 1982 as a replacement to the aging 2600 console.
Originally designed in the Atari dark brown coloring and with a set of much sturdier joysticks, the units were sent to Atari Sunnyvale for additional market study and work to be done.
Another side note: Certain Atari Engineering Logbooks show that the Atari 7800, once completed, would then be introduced as a newer "Low Cost 7800" and they were considering the use of the Atari 2100 case (later known as the 2600jr case).

Atari 2600 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atari had purchased an engineering think-tank in 1975 called Cyan Engineering to research next-generation video game systems, and had been working on a prototype known as "Stella" (named after one of the engineers' bicycles) for some time.
Atari then licensed the smash arcade hit Space Invaders by Taito, which greatly increased the unit's popularity when it was released in May 1980, doubling sales again to over 2 million units.
Atari continued to scoop up licenses during the shelf life of the 2600, the most prominent of which included Pac-Man and E.T. Public disappointment with these two titles and the market saturation of bad third-party titles are cited as big reasons for the video game crash of 1983.

Atari 2000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab-2.cs.princeton.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Atari 2000 (model number CX-2000) was a prototype version of the Atari 2600 intended to be released as a cheaper alternative for children in 1982.
The Atari 2000 was test marketed in some areas, but it's unclear what happened to most of those units.
People who have tried the 2000 have noted that its controllers are poor, and considering how the controllers may not have stood up to rough play from children, that may be the reason why it was never released.

In fact, the only way to speed around the level without dying every millisecond is to have aquired all the power-ups, and even then your fate is questionable.
As for the music, let's just say that Tempest 2000 was Imagitec's magnum opus and, most probably, a fluke -- Defender 2000's cliched techo falls somewhere between I-War and T2K (closer to I-War).
I found the "Defender 2000" mode virtually unplayable unless you play strictly by the radar screen (I could get that kind of action on a 2600!).

The Atari 2600 jr.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Atari 2000 was re-designed into the Atari 2600jr, basically the same motherboard design, less the built in joysticks, and also with the cartridge interface on the top of the unit instead of the rear of the unit.
HISTORAL NOTE: The Atari 2600 case design is the same exact design that was going to be used for the Atari 2600 Voice Commander Module which was designed by Milton Bradley for Atari.
Atari's Mark Biassotti designed the all new hi-tech Atari 2600jr case as well as the Atari 5100 (Little PAM) case as well.

But the new version, "Tempest 2000", makes the coin-op look like the relic it is. This game is fast.

Messages burst across the screen, pixels dance and swirl through explosions, and "Tempest 2000" mode adds filled polygons, seamless color gradients, and hypnotic effects in the bonus stages.

Although the RC Stella, as it was called within Atari's hardware development labs, didn't make it to market due to fear of reliability problems (and FCC regulations), many of its design features, good and bad, laid the foundation for the 2600's eventual successor, the 5200 SuperSystem.
