The Atari 5200 also suffered from its software incompatibility with the Atari 2600, though an adapter was later released in 1983 allowing it to play all Atari 2600 games, using the more reliable controllers native to that system.
Since the Atari 5200 was basically just an Atari 400 with a different controller, when I completed the home computer version, I was supposed to modify the game to use the "360-degree" 5200 controller (as opposed to the 9-position home computer joystick).
It should be noted, that during the course of Atari's support of the Atari 5200, 9 revisions of the Atari 5200 joysticks were made.

 AtariAge - Atari 5200 FAQ
Of course, the 5200 had many games that were not available on its 8-bit computer counterpart (and quite a few games that were available for both systems were superior on the 5200), so it's definitely worth getting into if you haven't already.
The Atari 5200 version of Cloak & Dagger, as well as versions of many other classic Atari games -- Crystal Castles (which was nearly finished when the layoff happened), Major Havoc (one of my favorite coin-op games, but the home computer conversion was barely started at the time of the layoffs), and Jr.

Atari 7800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With this system, Atari addressed all the shortcomings of the Atari 5200: it had simple digital joysticks; it was almost fully backwards compatible with the Atari 2600; and it was affordable (it was originally priced at $140 USD).
The system was designed to be upgraded to a fully-fledged home computer—a keyboard was developed, and the keyboard had an expansion port (which was the SIO port from Atari's 8-bit computer line) for the addition of peripherals like disk drives and printers.
In 1987, the Atari XEGS was released and it came with a light gun, called the XG-1.

With state of the art technology brought over from the Atari 400/800 computer systems the Atari 5200 packed a mean punch and came in a really mean looking case as well.
Many people thought the Atari 5200 was Atari's answer to the Colecovision, however the Atari 5200 was meant to be the Intellivision killer.

Atari did eventually rush a 2600 adaptor for the unit out, but it was to late - the infamous Video Game Crash came and the 5200 was eventually scraped.

 Atari7800.com - The ATARI 5200 SuperSystem
The Atari 5200 SuperSystem was born in 1980 as an idea inside the inner catacombs of Atari's development labs as the "Intellivision killer" which was to be the next generation in home gaming from Atari.
Originally dubbed the "Atari Video System X," the Atari 5200 was engineered from groundworks of existing Atari technology taken from their 400 and 800 series 8-Bit home computer lineup.
The Atari 5200 SuperSystem as it was to be known was capable of up to 16 colors on screen at one time, out of a palate of 256 colors, and featured much higher resolution and sound capabilities than its predecessor, the then five year old Atari 2600 VCS.

The 5200 sports some very unique features, even though it's hardware is based on the Atari 8-bit computer line.
According to Jerry Jessop, the 5200 controllers were designed in response to the claims that Intellivision controllers had 16-degrees of motion as opposed to 8-degrees for a 2600 controller.
Marketing at Atari decided that they needed to trump that and thus the 360 degree motion of the 5200 controller was born.

The Atari 5200 SuperSystem, released in late 1982 for $270 (USA), was the direct follow-up to the highly successful Atari 2600 (VCS), and predecessor of the Atari 7800 ProSystem.
Atari chose to design the 5200 around technology used in their popular Atari 400/800 8-bit computer line, but was not directly compatible, unlike Atari’s much later pastel-colored XEGS (XE Game System) console.
The Atari 5200, as designed, was more powerful than Mattel’s Intellivision and roughly equivalent to Coleco’s ColecoVision, both of which were the 2600’s main competition at the time and the systems Atari had to target in order to remain technologically competitive in the console marketplace.

Atari needed a powerful successor to the aging Atari 2600 VCS, but chose to focus on their old warhorse instead of their newer 5200 technology, and by 1983 it was beginning to cost them.
