Atari 7800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 7800 was the first game system from Atari which was designed by an outside company (by the General Computer Corporation, future consoles designed outside the company were the Atari Lynx and the Atari Jaguar).
In 1987, the Atari XEGS was released and it came with a light gun, called the XG-1.
The 7800 was test-marketed in southern California in June 1984.

The Atari 7800 was designed in the 1983-4 timeframe in North America, around the same time Nintendo was designing and releasing the Japanese version of their Nintendo Entertainment System.
Although the Atari 7800 was ready to go, licensing negotiations had to begin again because the Tramiels did not agree with some of the existing arrangements negotiated by Ray Kassar.
Atari spent the next two years working out the details, and the 7800 was finally ready to go in 1986.

Atari, with no real interest or time to develop new technology, decided to take the Atari 7800 and its existing software that was warehoused and release the system as-is. Unlike the NES, which was seemingly full of new ideas, the 7800’s deployment strategy was straight out of 1984, as were the initial games.
Atari did update the graphics and other functions internally within the 7800 via several new chips, the most important of which was the “MARIA”, which could allow over 100 objects on-screen at one time and provided for very stable, flicker-free images, particularly in comparison to the competition.
Atari’s management was responsible for many of the system’s implementation blunders, but ultimately, the 7800 was a victim of bad timing, first with the 1984 videogame crash, and second going up against Nintendo and their eventual greater than 90% share of the videogame market, and all the industry influence that that entails.

Atari, realizing their miscalculation in assuming video games were dead, released the Atari 7800 back into the marketplace in 1986.
Atari had some luck getting a few big name arcade games over to the 7800, courtesy of a loophole in Nintendo's contract: Nintendo could forbid software developers from programming games for competing systems but were powerless in situations where that developer had licensed the title from another party.
Atari's 2600 jr, XE Videogame System and 7800 Prosystem were all on the store shelves simultaneously in 1987, fighting for a share of Atari's limited shelf space.

Considering the marketing for the 7800 and the titles which appeared for it, I can't imagine Atari officials ever considered the 7800 a serious competitor to Nintendo's dominant NES.
While Centipede may have seemed like old news when it was released for the 7800 in 1986, having a good, solid copy of that game around these days is great for those of us who grew up in the 1980s and are prone to fits of nostalgia.
I know the Atari 7800, like all consoles, had some titles made for it which are rare and expensive these days.

Perhaps its most compelling feature, aside from its price, was the fact that the 7800 was backward-compatible (or, at least, was supposed to be) with the ubiquitous Atari 2600.
The 7800 was designed to avoid that problem altogether, and no module was necessary: the cartridges for both machines were identically shaped.

The Atari 7800 was intended to take the best features of both the Atari 2600 and 5200 and also compete against both the ColecoVision and Intellivision.
Because most people found the Atari 5200 controller confusing and difficult to use, the Atari 7800 was designed to feature a much simpler controller, which consists of a digital joystick and action buttons on both sides.
Some of this simplicity also revolves around the fact that the Atari 7800 could also play Atari 2600 games, which generally used just a basic joystick and one button.
