The Atari 800XL was the third version of the Atari 8-bit line of computers introduced in 1983.
The other new feature of the 800XL was the new high speed Parallel Bus Interface (PBI) which would allow the 800XL to connect to the Atari 1090: XL Expansion System which was an expansion box with 5 slots in it for an assortment of expansion cards.
Atari was already looking into Cost Reducing the 800XL line of computers, a newer version called the Atari 800XLCR (Codenamed "Keri") was already in the works and the new chip: "KERI" which was the Combine GTIA/ANTIC also referred to as the CGIA was in tests and almost ready.

Atari OS The Atari 400 and 800 were announced in December 1978, though they didn't actually start shipping until late in 1979.
The Atari 800 has multiple special purpose co-processors for sound and graphics to take the load off of the 6502 CPU, and it has sprites and collision-detection built into its hardware, so it is an excellent game machine.
Like the Atari 400, the 800 was designed by a team which included Jay Miner, who later went on to help design the Amiga 1000.

The Atari 400 and 800 were the first home computers to use custom coprocessors and the first to use "sprites" and special video interruptions like display lists, features that will be implemented later on the Commodore 64 and Amiga (The Atari 400/800 and the Amiga were both designed by Jay Miner).
The Atari 1200 XL was the predecessor of the Atari 600/800 XL.
The Atari 800XL, together with the 600XL, were successors of the Atari 400/800 series and the unsuccessful Atari 1200 XL in a more compact case.

THE ATARI 800XL is just the same as the 600XL, reviewed in the November issue of Your Computer - except for one thing: it has 64K of memory instead of 16K.
The 800XL is also pretty much the same as the old 800 in most respects, except for having four extra graphics modes and two fewer joystick ports.
The Atari 800XL, Commodore 64 and BBC Model B are three micros that stand out as being far superior to the Dragons, Tandys, Orics and Lynxs.

While the 8-bit Atari computers in their heyday were technically quite comparable if not superior in the worlds of home and business personal computing, they also live up to the name "Atari" with a huge library of video games which were often outstanding for their time.
Atari was a HUGE company, dominating Silicon Valley, and included a massive research and development department which famously designed many, many products that never saw the light of day.
Atari called this format "dual-density," but the Atari community quickly came to refer to this format as "enhanced-density" to better differentiate it from widely available 3rd-party truly double density disk drives and supporting versions of DOS.

I had my atari 800xl in 1985...i still use it only i have done a few things to it...i have 256k of ram (wow) 3 operating systems and a 1050 drive with a happy chip.
Probably the biggest difference between this new XL line (1200xl excepted) was that the 800xl and subsequent XL machines had a PBI (Parallel Bus Interface) which operated in 8-bit parallel at something like 3.5 megabits per second and opened the Atari to all kinds of high-speed peripherals such as hard disks, high-speed floppys, memory upgrades.
Atari stock speed is 19.2kbps, but most aftermarket drives used a sector interleave combined with a ram buffer in the drive to triple this.

 Exploring the XL
As an avid user of Atari computers who has been programming on an Atari 400 for over three years, I've been interested in the new XL line for a long time.
Many people, noting that the 800XL is advertised as a 64K machine, assume that it gives you 16K more RAM (random-access memory) for programming than the 48K Atari 800.
The 600XL and 800XL also come with "built-in BASIC" This is a revision (Rev. B) of the earlier, cartridge-based Atari BASIC (Rev. A).
