Adventure (Atari 2600) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adventure for the Atari 2600 is considered the first action-adventure video game.
Atari's Adventure went on to sell a million copies and is considered by many to be one of the company's finest games.
Adventure was also featured on The Onion, in the sidebar: a yellow cube was holding a 3D-looking arrow on a Quake 3-like 3D castle, with the caption "Atari Updates Adventure".

Adventure for the Atari 2600   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Adventure introduced the idea of movable objects (represented by visible icons) that could be picked up by the player (using a joystick) and moved from place to place in the game world.
Adventure also contained the first Easter Egg (hidden surprise) in a video game, which in this case was the author's signature hidden in a secret room.
Adventure can be run nowadays on a PC using an Atari 2600 emulator (such as PCAE or Stella) and a ROM image file (here or here) of the Adventure cartridge.

GamingWorld - X Clusive CGOTW: Adventure (Atari 2600)
In Adventure, gamers were to find an enchanted chalice, which was stolen by an evil magician and hidden somewhere in the kingdom.
Throughout their adventure, gamers were required to explore the White, Black, and Golden Castles, each needing to be unlocked with a hidden key of the corresponding color.
While somewhat uninteresting and archaic by today’s standards, when put into context, Adventure is truly one of the single most important video games of all time, and its influence is as far reaching as the influence of the Atari 2600 itself.

Hence, the name Atari continues to live on for tax purposes, and the odds are very good that the licensing of titles and patents under the Atari name will continue for several years, at least.
Atari's official position was that market research showed that a TV tuner, while a neat idea, would not be bought by most players.
Atari had an experimental adaptor for the Lynx that allowed graphics to be shown on a conventional television set.

 Adventure - Digital Press Online
In another reference I had made to Atari’s Adventure several years ago (I think it’s in the DP Collector’s Guide), I stated that this was the first game that made me understand the potential video games had, and ultimately the one that hooked me for good.
It’s funny, when you look at this game today it’s SO outdated: no screen has more than two background colors, the elements of the game are extremely simple (your character is a tiny square), there’s practically no sound in the game, having more than two objects occupy any screen causes everything to flicker...
I don’t know if everyone got to experience that thrill before having it spoiled by a magazine telling you how to find it, but I can tell you that to this day it was one of the great gaming experiences of my time.

Atari got in on the publicity surrounding Robinett's credit, when in fact he himself had kept it secret because it used 5% of the code that ran Adventure - and he feared he'd get fired for "wasting" that much of the game's memory capacity on what amounted to an in-joke.
Plans were promptly drawn up for an ambitious multi-game sequel to Adventure, with a heavy emphasis on the kind of hidden features that very likely would have cost Robinett his job.

One of the most famous Atari 2600 games, and probably the first console videogame to contain an Easter Egg - by placing a certain object in a certain place in the game, the programmer's name is revealed on the screen.
It is also considered by many to be the first graphical Adventure game, and was directly inspired by the original text game called Adventure by Willie Crowther and Don Woods.
The original text game ran on mainframe computers and required hundreds of KB of memory - Atari 2600 programmer Warren Robinett had to figure out how to make a graphical version in only 4KB.
