Atari Cosmos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atari Cosmos was a failed attempt by Atari to release a tabletop video game system that would utilize holography and LEDs to create a unique gaming experience.
The Cosmos was to have 9 released games, but all of the actual games were in the Cosmos itself (the cartridges only contained the holographic images and a notch to identify what game it was).
It was speculated that Atari felt the Cosmos was too much of a risk in the face of the criticism it had received.

 ATARI Cosmos
Atari's only entry in to the tabletop market, this was also Atari's only foray in to holography.
Atari proceeded to advertise and promote the unit before it's release, and even demonstrated it at the New York Toy Fair in 1981.
Atari still did use it's holographic materials stock though - they were recycled to be used as hologram stickers when Atari went to the newer silver color coded boxes for it's cartridges for the 2600 and 5200 systems.

In ads made for the system before the Cosmos' cancellation, Atari claimed that the holographic images were life like and 3D (Having a three-dimensional form or appearance).
Everything seemed ready to go, but Atari pulled the plug by the end of 1981, probably due to all the flaws.

Atari commented that this was the first of its kind tabletop holographic video game and that the use of the holograms in this fashion was a first attempt and that the reviewers should not be so critical of the use of the holograms in this way.

Atari became excited about the possibility of using holograms for videogames, and spent a great deal of time and money in the Disco Decade researching holograms and purchasing hologram-related patents.
Cosmos spent several years in development, partly because the technology to mass-produce the necessary holograms had to be invented before the system could work.
Atari agreed, and decided to put off the release of Cosmos until the holograms could be used more effectively.
