Atari POKEY - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atari POKEY is a digital I/O chip found in the Atari 8-bit family of home computers and many arcade games in the 1980s.
POKEY is also well known for its sound effect and music generation capabilities, producing a distinctive square wave sound popular among chip tune aficionados.
The USPTO granted U.S. Patent 4,314,236 to Atari on February 2, 1982 for an "Apparatus for producing a plurality of audio sound effects".

Atari 7800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With this system, Atari addressed all the shortcomings of the Atari 5200: it had simple digital joysticks; it was almost fully backwards compatible with the Atari 2600; and it was affordable (it was originally priced at $140 USD).
The 7800 was the first game system from Atari which was designed by an outside company (by the General Computer Corporation, future consoles designed outside the company were the Atari Lynx and the Atari Jaguar).
In 1987, the Atari XEGS was released and it came with a light gun, called the XG-1.

Atari 8-bit family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atari researched on what would be needed to produce a workable home computer of their own.
Atari had originally intended to port Microsoft BASIC to the machine, as had most other vendors, intending to supply it on an 8k ROM cartridge.
Atari's peripherals were named after the machines they were intended to be used with, so in general they have names like "410" and "1050".

The atari 5200 was essentially a repackaged Atari 400/800 computer.
The Pokey chip was used to generate sound, handle controller I/O, random numbers, IRQ handling, and control of the serial expansion port.
Atari did eventually rush a 2600 adaptor for the unit out, but it was to late - the infamous Video Game Crash came and the 5200 was eventually scraped.

While the original version from Atari is still a blast to play, Medieval Madness adds arcade features and a level of polish missing from the original 2600 release, as well as a menu to select options before starting the game.

Atari POKEY Chip Emulator V2.0 ============================== by Ron Fries 31 Jan 97 The PokeySound Chip Emulator is designed to emulate the functionality of the Atari POKEY Chip Hardware through 'C' Sourcecode.
Differences Between the Emulator and the Actual POKEY Chip: ----------------------------------------------------------- The biggest difference between the emulator and the original hardware is that the emulator emulates an 'ideal' POKEY chip.
If 4 POKEY chips are emulated and all 16 channels are used at full volume, the gain must be no more than 16 to prevent distortion.

While the 8-bit Atari computers in their heyday were technically quite comparable if not superior in the worlds of home and business personal computing, they also live up to the name "Atari" with a huge library of video games which were often outstanding for their time.
The ideal Atari monitor cable includes 4 RCA male connectors on the output end, carrying the sound signal, the composite video signal, the composite luminance signal, and the composite chrominance signal.
Note: After having 3-4 Atari and at least one (converted) Sega lightgun, it is my personal impression, that the Atari lightgun merely works ok on/with TV-sets (and not at all with a monitor), whereas the Sega lightgun works alright on TV's and (most) monitors.

Best place to hear what's on atari is the SAP archive, which was inspired by the Hi Voltage SID collection of tunes (link on the site to that).
POKEY was 3 years older than SID but Arcade developers used POKEY for their stuff vs SID.

Inside the POKEY is a 6-bit binary counter, a 6-bit compare latch, and an 8-bit key code latch.
If the debounce is disabled, the POKEY forces the binary counter equal compare latch signal to a logic true value which will disable debounce.
If the POKEY is in the initial state (see SKTLS), the counter is set to all ones state, therefore the CPU will read $FF.

Atari was a HUGE company, dominating Silicon Valley, and included a massive research and development department which famously designed many, many products that never saw the light of day.
Atari called this format "dual-density," but the Atari community quickly came to refer to this format as "enhanced-density" to better differentiate it from widely available 3rd-party truly double density disk drives and supporting versions of DOS.

Especially I like squarewave music very much."Squarewave" is the stylistical term for that sort of minimalistical, monotonous musical sound as it was played by the early homecomputers and tv-games,and as it is still produced by some electronic doorchimes, electronic toys and toy organs.
The Atari XL musics were really much to good to be lost and also the melo- dies of the Compumate with their unique squarewave harmonies really should be preserved. The POKEY chip is less complex than the C64 SID,so it should be not too difficult to emulate it properly.
But I am especially fascinated by POKEY (Atari 8Bit) musics;unfortunately there is no POKEY-Player for PC yet(only a beta release for my Amiga).

The Atari Pokey chip, pictured above is used on several of their early 8 bit computers, but is used much more widely in the early 80s video game PCBs, where it produced much of the sound effects and music for the games.
The pokey has already been emulated for MAME, and so the source code to a pokey emulator was already available.
This could be re-written for a fast microcontroller, and with a few additional chips, could be made into a Pokey.
